Tree coppicing<\/h2>\n
In the past, sweet chestnut and hornbeam were the commonly grown for coppicing. But most trees will respond positively to a \u2018brutal\u2019 chop \u2013 as long as the tree is well established and has not been grafted.<\/p>\n
The size and style of our gardens usually restricts our choice of trees. While plenty of smaller trees are prized for their bark, flowers and autumn foliage, larger-growing species are often left out of the equation. However, by managing trees \u2028and large shrubs as coppiced specimens, you can open up a whole new world of choice and ornamental potential.<\/p>\n

Which trees and shrubs to coppice<\/h3>\n
Red oak<\/h4>\n
It\u2019s rare to see now, but there was a tradition \u2028of coppicing oaks for boat building because \u2028the regrowth is often curved, and was much \u2028prized for making keels. The young foliage \u2028of Quercus rubra<\/em> would make an unusual \u2028addition to an ornamental border.<\/p>\n
Hornbeam<\/h4>\n
Carpinus betulus<\/em> was once one of the most commonly coppiced trees, its dense wood \u2028prized as fuel. Coppiced for garden use, \u2028the hornbeam would offer a dense foliage backdrop or screen, as when used for hedging.<\/p>\n
Birch<\/h4>\n
Betula species also produces spring catkins \u2028and delicate new foliage \u2013 coppicing encourages the much prized multi-stemmed growth that makes for a beautiful winter bark display.<\/p>\n
Dogwoods<\/h4>\n
The new stems of Cornus alba<\/em> \u2018Kesselringii\u2019 are \u2028a much richer, dark maroon red than \u2018Sibirica\u2019, \u2028and this cultivar is also slower-growing. Coppiced willows such as Salix alba \u2028var. vitellina<\/em> \u2018Britzensis\u2019 also produce \u2028beautiful coloured young stems which \u2028make a fantastic winter display.<\/p>\n
