There is no doubt that dogwoods (Cornus<\/em>) are an essential plant for the winter border, as they have such colourful winter stems<\/a>. The effect of rich red, orange, yellow or bright green multiple stems in winter light is stunning, especially when planted in large groups by water.<\/p>\n

Dogwoods combine well in borders with the white winter stems of the ghost bramble (Rubus cockburnianus<\/em> or R. thibetanus<\/em>) for contrast, and also look good with emerging early spring bulbs.<\/p>\n

Perhaps because this has become a planting trend in recent years, gardeners have become a little over-zealous in coppicing<\/a> or pruning \u00a0dogwoods to get those desirable colourful stems. As a result, plants are often pruned too early in their life span, with disappointing results.<\/p>\n

How to prune dogwood<\/h2>\n
The trick for getting the best out of dogwoods is to let them establish for three to four years before you coppice for the first time. Then cut back hard every other year for the colourful stems.<\/p>\n
When to prune dogwood<\/h3>\n
Prune dogwood in early spring, before the plants have started into leaf. Much of the work can be carried out with a pair of good, sharp secateurs<\/a>, because stems are relatively thin. But for thicker stems, always use a small, sharp pruning saw<\/a>, as long-handled loppers<\/a> can squash the ends of the cut and bruise the stems, which ultimately leads to die-back and rotting.<\/p>\n
