To water your houseplant, it is best to take the plant out of the pot cover, water it, drain, then return to its pot cover. Do not be tempted to water the plant while it is sitting inside its ceramic pot \u2013 you risk allowing the plant to sit in a pool of water at the bottom, which might seem useful but will actually result in wet, boggy compost that can kill plants.<\/p>\nWhen choosing a pot, go for one that has a diameter that is 1-2cm larger than the plant\u2019s plastic pot (or 3-4cm for larger plants), so that it will fit comfortably inside. Also check its height \u2013 you don\u2019t want the plastic pot peeking over the top of the ceramic one. Bear in mind that if the decorative pot tapers at the base, it might not be wide enough for your plant to sit at the bottom. In this case, you could add an upturned plant saucer, pebbles or gravel at the base. Remember that this will raise the height of the pot in the planter.<\/p>\n
