However, by the end of the month I generally find that I can\u2019t wait any longer and start off onions, broad beans and <a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/sweet-peas-growing-tips-and-where-to-buy-the-best-range-of-seeds\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">sweet peas<\/a> in modules, first in the <a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/outdoor-living\/best-mini-greenhouses\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">greenhouse<\/a> but then quickly moving them somewhere cool (but frost free) to grow on.<\/p>\n<h4>Sweet peas<\/h4>\n<p>I find starting off <a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/best-scented-sweet-peas\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">sweet peas<\/a> now easier than looking after them through all of winter, though these early module sowings usually require potting on and supporting with split canes or twigs, before planting out in spring.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t plant perennials, plant trees and shrubs<\/h3>\n<p>As January is usually one of the coldest months, I would avoid planting <a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/tips-for-combining-perennials-and-roses\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">perennials<\/a> (which I\u2019ve found generally do better if they can get growing straight away). Instead, <a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/planting-tree-maintenance-care\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">plant trees<\/a> and <a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/the-best-winter-stems-for-late-season-colour\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">shrubs<\/a>.
