Works well when dotted through naturalistic mixed perennial plantings, but also in groups at the front of a border. A sterile selection that doesn\u2019t seed around like the magenta wild form. Native to dry <a href=\""\/gardens\/country\/woodland-garden-inspiration-fern-alder\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">woodlands<\/a> and glades in the Ozarks, it prefers sun, but can tolerate light <a href=\""\/garden-advice\/shady-gardens\/best-plants-for-shade\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">shade<\/a>. Shiny foliage emerges dark-purple in spring. A perfect addition to any garrigue-like planting or <a href=\""\/gardens\/country\/gravel-garden-dorset\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">gravel garden<\/a>. Well-behaved semi-evergreen cool-season grass, is useful as a<a href=\"\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/ground-cover-best-plants\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\"> ground cover<\/a> matrix or understorey, and for planting through. Mid-green spring foliage is joined in summer by airy flower spikes. <strong>H<\/strong> 35cm. <strong>S<\/strong> 35cm. <strong>C<\/strong> Mesic to dry, well-drained soil; full sun to part shade.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Sporobolus heterolephis<\/em> \u2018Odorous Cloud\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Fine, arching foliage and diffuse clouds of airy flowers shimmer on this grass that looks great with echinacea seedheads.
