And so, on a recent visit to the Loire Valley, also known as \u2018the garden of France\u2019, I was surprised by the diversity and wildness of many of the gardens being created there. From <a href=\"\/\/f118ca30-ccd9-49a1-9f81-83df4c9e3931&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noreferrer noopener noreferrer\" noopener=\"\">drought tolerant<\/a> planting to garden <a href=\"\/\/807b96f0-c27a-4798-83d1-07027d5d1730&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noreferrer noopener noreferrer\" noopener=\"\">weeds<\/a> tours and from innovative kitchen gardens to resilient planting at the International Garden Festival, the wealth and variation of gardens in Val de Loire cannot be overstated. When you look across the sweeping view of the gardens you are met with <a href=\"\/\/079251d3-72a9-40b8-807c-49be273d9841&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noreferrer noopener noreferrer\" noopener=\"\">box<\/a> parterres, lime avenues and a vegetable garden laid out with immense precision. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"&quot;wp-block-image\" size-full=\"\"><figcaption class=\"&quot;wp-element-caption&quot;\">Chateau de Villandry \u2013 \u2013 <\/figcaption><\/figure> <p>However, as you wander further away from the house, you\u2019ll find a more playful style of garden not visible from the castle\u2019s imposing fa\u00e7ade. The Sun Garden, on the ch\u00e2teau\u2019s highest terrace, is filled with <a href=\"\/\/f118ca30-ccd9-49a1-9f81-83df4c9e3931&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noreferrer noopener noreferrer\" noopener=\"\">drought-tolerant<\/a> planting laid out by the current owner, Henri Carvallo. Created between 2006 and 2008, based on designs done by his great-grandfather, Henri brought The Sun Garden to life with the help of several experts. It is an unexpected space in what is otherwise a very traditional garden, and certainly challenges the perception that a formal space needs to be a high-maintenance one (though Villandry has plenty of those too).<\/p> <p><em><a href=\"\/\/www.chateauvillandry.fr\/?lang=en&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noreferrer noopener noreferrer\" noopener=\"\">Visit Ch\u00e2teau de Villandry<\/a> <\/em><\/p> <h3>The International Garden Festival at the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire<\/h3> <p>Down the river from Villandry, you will find the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, home to the International Garden Festival and a UNESCO world heritage site. I encountered pools that had been dyed red in Louise Quintana and Guillaume Collaudin\u2019s garden \u2018Une (Presque) \u00cele Vertueuse\u2019 and piles of blue glass, representing salt, in a garden filled with plants adapted to high levels of salinity called \u2018Le Chant du Sel\u2019. Ch\u00e2teau du Rivau is surrounded by sprawling gardens laid out by owner Patricia Laigneau, who is also the holder of France\u2019s national collection of scented <a href=\"\/\/64cdf3dc-ab92-4fd4-a466-d702fd032405&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noreferrer noopener noreferrer\" noopener=\"\">roses<\/a>, many of which are on display. Maurine said this was something they were happy with and alongside their edible flower tours, they\u2019ve launched weed tours of the garden, encouraging people to learn about the uses and importance of these common garden plants. \u201cWeeds have their place in the garden and there are many things to say about them,\u201d she told me.
