However some tulip types are reliably perennial, and others will return year after year if grown in ideal conditions. <\/p><p><strong>Read our expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/how-to-grow-tulips\">tulip Grow Guide<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><p>\u2018Botanical\u2019 tulips, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/bulbs\/species-tulips-to-grow\">species tulips<\/a>, <em>Tulipa kaufmannia<\/em> and its hybrids, <em>Tulipa greigii<\/em>, <em>Tulipa tarda<\/em>, <em>Tulipa turkestanica<\/em> and <em>Tulipa praestans<\/em>, are naturally perennial. However they are generally short in stature with small flowers and need very good drainage, so work best in raised beds, gravel gardens or rockeries.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tulipa &#8216;Spring Green&#8217; \u00a9 Rachel Warne<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><br\/><br\/>Viridiflora tulips have chlorophyll in their flowers, and are tinged with green. As the flower also photosynthesises, the bulb has extra reserves of energy, so is more likely to bloom year after year. They have huge flowers and very large bulbs and usually come in red, orange, yellow or pink. They include the bright-red \u2018Apeldoorn\u2019 and the Impression series.<\/p><p>Other cultivars are also reliably perenial, provided that they are grown in optimal conditions.
