What I love about these annual displays is their vigour; tulips and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/growing-hyacinths\">hyacinths<\/a> in their first year produce big, strong, blowsy flowers that would look out of place in the open ground, but look wonderful packed into containers or special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/flowers\/best-flowers-cutting-garden-beth-chatto\">cutting<\/a> beds. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pots of hyacinths \u00a9 Britt Willoughby Dyer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I look on these annual displays as an opportunity for experimental planting, choosing a different colour theme each year. The next layer will be a mid-season tulip from within the same colour palette, then another layer, this time using fewer bulbs, because they\u2019ll be overlapping with those below and then the final layer will be early flowering tulips, fewer still. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/IMG_9544-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"In May T. \u2018Black Hero\u2019 and T. \u2018James Wild\u2019 mix shades of rich toffee and burnt orange, a combination that matches the earthy colours and the textures of both the pot and the wall behind.\" class=\"wp-image-158788\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In May Tulipa \u2018Black Hero\u2019 and Tulipa \u2018James Wild\u2019 mix shades of rich toffee and burnt orange, a combination that matches the earthy colours and the textures of both the pot and the wall behind. \u00a9 Britt Willoughby Dyer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I may even add another two layers \u2013 one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/growing-hyacinths\">hyacinths<\/a>, to flower with the early tulips, and on top of that some really early bulbs, such as<em> Muscari<\/em> (grape hyacinths), which get covered over as the bulbs below emerge. Once the early tulips have flowered I\u2019ll cut the stems back to soil level and I do that successively as the bulbs finish. These pots will flower for over a month, from April to May.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/IMG_8925-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Pots of tulips by the house.\" class=\"wp-image-158789\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pots of tulips by the house. \u00a9 Britt Willoughby Dyer<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>If I\u2019m planting tulips on their own in a pot, I may run out of time and do it after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/christmas\">Christmas<\/a>, which is fine for tulips, but if you\u2019re mixing the tulips with other bulbs, such as hyacinths, you\u2019ll need to plant up by November. Once the pots have finished flowering, the bulbs can be lifted and dried, and then re-planted in the garden.
