Words Annie Gatti Photographs Carole Drake <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Annie Gatti\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 10 October 2023 at 08:25 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Corsley House, a handsome ashlar stone building set in wooded land below Cley Hill in rural Wiltshire, had its origins as a Jacobean farmhouse.<\/p><p>Just as its Georgian and Victorian additions lend the house character and individuality, so the recent development of its garden, under the ownership of American anglophiles Keith Johnson and Glen Senk, has created an exciting series of spaces that connect to the landscape and celebrate the joy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/sustainable-garden-growing\">gardening with nature<\/a>.<\/p><div class=\"is-layout-constrained is-layout-constrained wp-block-group highlight-box\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><p>You may also like<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/country\/cornish-edible-forest-garden\">An edible forest garden in Cornwall<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/country\/nant-y-bedd-garden\">Nant y Bedd: a forest garden in the Black Mountains<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/country\/admington-antonia-davies\">Admington Hall: Antonia Davies&#8217; ever-evolving garden<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><p>When the couple bought the property in 2018, they found a garden that had been loved in earlier times, with elements they definitely wanted to keep: majestic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\">trees<\/a> (including copper beech, cedars and an Indian bean tree), yew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/hedging-plants-30-best\">hedging<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/design-solutions-topiary\">topiary<\/a>, a huge walled garden and several historic structures and outbuildings including a grain store, threshing barn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/outdoor-living\/best-potting-sheds\">potting shed<\/a>, apple store and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/greenhouses-with-porches\">greenhouse<\/a> overrun with vines. With the arrival of head gardener Jo Downes, an experienced horticulturist and committed environmental scientist, their English gardening journey began.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The area that has seen most changes is the Walled Garden, a formerly neglected productive garden with high walls on two sides, a low wall overlooking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/expert-tips-for-designing-a-meadow\">wildflower meadow<\/a> and a hedge on the fourth side. Jo was given free rein here, and it has now become Keith and Glen\u2019s favourite place.<\/p><div class=\"is-layout-constrained is-layout-constrained wp-block-group highlight-box\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><p><strong>KEY ELEMENTS<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>What<\/strong> A relaxed and biodiverse garden, which has recently been brought back to life and now sits comfortably in its rural setting.<\/p><p><strong>Where<\/strong> Wiltshire.<\/p><p><strong>Size<\/strong> Approximately 15 acres.<\/p><p><strong>Soil<\/strong> Free-draining greensand, improved with tonnes of organic matter.<\/p><p><strong>Climate<\/strong> Mild.<\/p><p><strong>Hardiness zone<\/strong> USDA 9.<\/p><\/div><\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA-121469-lighter_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159433\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Walled Garden, which you enter from the threshing barn on one side and the potting shed on the other, has been revitalised with head gardener Jo Downes\u2019s design. It features eight sections, separated by brick and gravel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/garden-path-ideas\">paths<\/a>, for productive fruit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/best-vegetables-grow-garden\">vegetables<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/grow-herbs-best\">herbs<\/a> such as rosemary \u2018Miss Jessopp\u2019s Upright\u2019, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/flowers\/best-cut-flowers-grow-garden\">flowers for cutting<\/a>. A repurposed wash tub, found in the potting shed and now filled with prostrate rosemary, forms the centrepiece of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/download-designer-herb-border\">herb garden<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA-121589v2_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159432\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The undulating landform, a series of wave-like peaks and troughs, was Keith\u2019s brainchild. It took two attempts to achieve the beautiful close-cut sward of each wave. When the carefully raked banks, which were made to uniform heights by using a series of string lines, were initially sprayed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/soft-landscaping\/best-grass-seed\">grass seed<\/a>, much of it was washed away by torrential rain. A subsequent period of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/dry-gardens\/adapting-drought-gardening-tips\">drought<\/a> dried off the tops of each mound, and weeds took hold. Random <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/bulbs\/narcissi-how-to-plant\">daffodils<\/a>, moved around by the earth sculpting, also popped up. The seeding had to be repeated, and this time, the growth was successful. The grass is kept short with regular mowing. \u201cAt dawn and dusk you get amazing shadows across the waves,\u201d says head gardener Jo, \u201cand it looks spectacular in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/winter\">winter<\/a> dusted with frost.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA_121519_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159434\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Three topiary beech anchor the plants in the recently planted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/autumn\/ornamental-grasses-the-best\">grasses<\/a> bed. The taller sections on either side of the gate will eventually be pruned as horses\u2019 heads, to celebrate Glen\u2019s show-jumping days.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA_121493_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159438\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Cardoons in the long border on the outer wall of the Walled Garden are left standing for their architectural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/seedheads-for-winter-structure\">seedheads<\/a>, as are most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/perennial-plants-best\">perennials<\/a> in the garden. <em>Aster<\/em> x <em>frikartii<\/em> \u2018M\u00f6nch\u2019, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/how-to-grow-sunflowers\">Helianthus<\/a><\/em> \u2018Lemon Queen\u2019, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/recommendations-for-salvias-to-grow-in-the-garden\">Salvia<\/a> nemorosa<\/em> \u2018Caradonna\u2019 and <em>Agastache<\/em> \u2018Blue Fortune\u2019 attract beneficial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/attract-wildlife-garden\">insects<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA_121477_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159439\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The cobblestone and brick path in the Walled Garden features a circular motif repeated throughout the garden. This entrance to the Walled Garden has been filled with a dry-stone wall. \u201cWe have many walls with bricked-in doorways suggesting another time and purpose,\u201d says Keith. \u201cThis lends a bit of mystery.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA-121450v2_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159440\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Jubilee Garden was replanted in 2021 and features lollipop bay trees underplanted with a selection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/dry-gardens\/drought-tolerant-plants\">drought-tolerant plants<\/a>, including <em>Oenothera lindheimeri<\/em> \u2018Whirling Butterflies\u2019, <em>Centranthus ruber<\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/how-to-grow-nepeta\">Nepeta<\/a> racemosa<\/em> \u2018Walker\u2019s Low\u2019.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA_121491_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159441\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/garden-water-feature-ideas-expert-tips-for-using-water-in-the-garden\">water feature<\/a> was added, with spouts that create a constant sound of falling water. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/euphorbia-how-to-care-for-and-look-after-euphorbias-in-your-garden\">Euphorbia<\/a> palustris<\/em> and other plants, including <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/verbena-what-is-how-to-grow\">Verbena<\/a> officinalis<\/em> \u2018Bampton\u2019, are encouraged to self-seed in the gaps between the paving stones.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/09\/DRA-121582-v3-lighter_preview-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Corsley House\" class=\"wp-image-159442\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Carole Drake<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Three rows of <a href=\"navto:\/\/6b1f37be-41b5-40c6-b406-a2132a2a50f1\">dahlias<\/a>, in shades of claret, apricot and peach, are grown in the cutting garden and are protected with a deep mulch in winter. They include <em>Dahlia<\/em> \u2018Chat Noir\u2019, \u2018Penhill Watermelon\u2019, \u2018Totally Tangerine\u2019 and \u2018Caf\u00e9 au Lait\u2019.
