His practical gardening magazine column series includes tips on what to plant in November.<\/p><p>Don&#8217;t miss our suggestions of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/best-flowers-plants-november\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> best plants for November<\/a>, what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardens-to-visit\/gardens-to-visit-november-autumn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gardens to visit<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/november-gardening-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gardening jobs for the month.<\/a><\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-to-plant-in-november\">What to plant in November<\/h2><p>Low light levels and short days make this month less suitable for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/our-favourite-seed-suppliers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sowing many seeds.<\/a> However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\/trees-for-small-gardens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/the-best-winter-stems-for-late-season-colour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shrubs<\/a> and umbel seed often germinate better following a period of cold weather and can be sown now, covered with grit and left somewhere outside, safe from mice and other pests.<\/p><p>I like to use open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/tools\/best-cold-frames\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold frames<\/a>, where I can protect plants from excessive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/how-to-collect-rainwater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rainfall<\/a> and offer night protection \u2013 but planting in a sheltered spot near to the house or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/tools\/best-garden-sheds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shed<\/a> will work just as well.<\/p><p>In mild parts of the country, you can direct sow broad beans and plant out autumn garlic and onion sets.<\/p><p>Indoors I like to sow micro greens and cut-and-come-again salad leaves that can easily be grown on a windowsill or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/what-to-grow-greenhouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greenhouse<\/a> shelf. Mixed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/tools\/seed-boxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seed packets<\/a> are available and include various beets, brassicas, mustards and herbs, all of which are packed with flavour and nutrients.<\/p><p>Sowing several peas into a two- or three-litre pot will also provide pea shoots for winter cropping. Where sowing is sparse this month, planting is not and now is the perfect time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/planting-tree-maintenance-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plant trees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/the-best-winter-stems-for-late-season-colour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shrubs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to-prune-roses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/hedging-plants-30-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hedging<\/a>.<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t hang up your wellies and spade just yet.
