When you\u2019re a professional gardener, people often comment, \u2018It must be quiet for you now\u2026\u2019 No, the quietest time for gardening is August, not December. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/christmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christmas<\/a> arrives and we gardeners need a good rest.<\/p><p>During a largely hard frost-free winter is when we complete the jobs to make next spring the best. It\u2019s optimism and hopefulness that spurs us on. Have a seat and take in the views that you most regularly have of your outdoor space; cast a critical eye over what you see. Planting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/plants-for-birds-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evergreen shrubs with long-lasting fruit<\/a> might be the aesthetic improvement and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/attract-wildlife-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildlife food source<\/a> your garden needs. Look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\/the-best-crab-apple-trees-for-colour-and-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crab apples<\/a> for warm colours and <em>Pyracantha<\/em> to train and shape formally, around windows and along fences. If you do one thing differently for wildlife, don\u2019t remove lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/advice-on-growing-climbers-on-a-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ivy<\/a>. Take modest amounts if you\u2019re using it for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/christmas\/make-christmas-wreath-big\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> wreath making <\/a>but leave the fruit for birds \u2013 Christmas lunch is for everyone. Keep this water clean and unfrozen.<\/li><li>Grab some logs and sticks and build a log pile. You can spend hours or just seconds, but the important thing is that afterwards, don\u2019t touch your creation unless to add to it from above. Intact, unmoved and degrading it provides shelter, warmth and food, depending on what you are\u2026<br\/><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" class=\"wp-image-24518 size-landscape_thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/12\/Log-pile_Ham-House-and-Garden_Chris-Davies-2-4f9bf3b.jpg?fit=800%2C532\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/li><li>Find some less visible, out of the way areas by fences or under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardens-to-visit\/inspiring-hedges-to-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hedges<\/a> and do nothing to them until spring. Leave the leaf litter, the twigs and a slight level of apparent untidiness. You are providing a warm resting place for something by doing nothing at all \u2013 enjoy the feel-good factor.<br\/><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" class=\"wp-image-24517 size-landscape_thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/12\/Garden-matter-heap_Ham-House-and-Garden_Chris-Davies-1-a898ffe.jpg?fit=800%2C532\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/li><li>If there is an empty spot that you pass regularly in the colder months, it\u2019s the season to treat yourself to winter or Christmas box (<em>Sarcococca confusa<\/em>\/<em>Sarcococca hookeriana<\/em>\/<em>Sarcococca humilis<\/em>). In the coldest months, this reserved shrub with smart, shiny leaves throws out a heady, sweet scent from small, white\/cream flowers that will transport you to flowering summer roses and warmer, light-filled times. I promise.<\/li><\/ol><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/author\/rosiefyles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Read Rosie Fyle&#8217;s previous columns here<\/strong><\/a><\/p><h3 id=\"h-clearing-away-debris\">Clearing away debris<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5616\" height=\"3276\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/11\/RakingleavesGetty-8071632.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7061\"\/><\/figure><p>During the season, clutter builds up in the garden. Old supports, mouldy netting and broken pots need to be cleared away, and forgotten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardeners\/no-dig-expert-charles-dowding-recommends-the-best-winter-vegetables-to-grow\/\">vegetables<\/a> need to be pulled out and composted. Leaves will have scattered themselves across paths and need <a href=\"\/garden-equipment\/best-garden-rakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raking<\/a> up. Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/tools\/best-garden-brooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">broom with hard-wearing bristles<\/a>, that are perfect for removing stubborn, damp leaves from paving or decking. If leaves cover vegetable beds or borders, leave them be; they are a great natural option for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/feature\/mulch-compost-black-magic-alice-vincent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mulch<\/a> and add nutrients to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/resources\/what-is-soil-and-how-can-gardeners-improve-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soil<\/a>.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-spruce-up-your-paving-slabs\">Spruce up your paving slabs<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5500\" height=\"3729\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/11\/GettyImages-1012456142-1cd2b3e.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7060\"\/><\/figure><p>Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/best-patio-cleaners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pressure washer<\/a> to blast away the growth that accumulates on wet stone, which can become slippery and unsightly when left for too long. . It&#8217;s also worth taking some time to clean the space between the slabs with a small paving brush. Tidying and sorting your pots allows you to see what you have and what you need for the season ahead and it&#8217;s a good opportunity to check your pots for damage &#8211; any that are broken or starting to crack can be used as crocks in the spring.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-sharpen-your-tools\">Sharpen your tools<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4911\" height=\"3274\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2016\/11\/JAKE8044-f358fa2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7057\"\/><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/tools\/best-gardening-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garden tools<\/a> have a hard life but if you keep them in peak condition they will continue to be a pleasure to use and will remain sharp and efficient for many years. Once the last of their leaves have been shed, cut back any branches that hang too low or look untidy. The lack of foliage allows you to see the full shape of the tree so you can prune it back to your preferred shape and size.
