Push your finger deep into the pot; if you feel moisture, don\u2019t water.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/house-plants\/watering-house-plants-guide\">Golden rules for watering house plants<\/a><\/p><h3><strong>Mottled, sticky leaves<\/strong><\/h3><p><strong>Cause<\/strong><br\/>Mottled, sticky leaves can indicate the presence of pests such as thrips and mealybugs.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br\/>My preferred pest solution is either biological control (good bugs that eat bad bugs) or diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is my go to for all pests. It&#8217;s amazing. Search for &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Diatomaceous-Earth-500g-Ultrafine-Powder\/dp\/B075J49SDD\/ref=sr_1_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">food grade diatomaceous\u00a0earth<\/a>&#8216;. Wear a mask when using it, like you would when using perlite, and remember\u00a0it\u00a0only works when it&#8217;s dry.\u00a0<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-purple-m101-in-text\"><div class=\"m101\" data-type=\"in-text\" data-template=\"default\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Diatomaceous-Earth-500g-Ultrafine-Powder\/dp\/B075J49SDD\/ref=sr_1_1\" data-text=\"Buy from {merchant} ({price}), {merchant} ({price}) and {merchant} ({price}).\" data-config=\"{&quot;searchKeywords&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;excludeKeywords&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;priceMin&quot;:&quot;12&quot;,&quot;priceMax&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\"\/><\/div><h3><strong>Fungus gnats<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1772378904-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Fungus gnats stuck on yellow sticky trap c\" class=\"wp-image-163336\"\/><\/figure><p><strong>Cause<\/strong><br\/>Consistently damp soil attracts fungus gnats, and is a sure sign of overwatering.<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br\/>Place yellow sticky traps into the affected plant pots and buy fungus-gnat-killing nematodes for the soil. You can also use a carnivorous plant called<em> Pinguicula<\/em> (butterwort), which attracts the gnats to their sticky leaves.<\/p><h3><strong>Brown leaf tips<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1265001368-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Brown leaf tips\" class=\"wp-image-163331\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Getty Images \/ Sevda Ercan<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><strong>Cause<\/strong><br\/>Brown leaf tips on a house plant can be caused by inconsistent watering or a lack of humidity.<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br\/>Try to get into the habit of checking your plant more regularly to see if it needs water. If you\u2019re worried about low humidity, use a humidifier. Misting is ineffective.<\/p><p>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/house-plants\/misting-house-plants-necessary\">Do you really need to mist your house plants?<\/a><\/p><h3><strong>Wilting<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1921\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-950914522-1-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Wilting peace lily\" class=\"wp-image-163337\"\/><\/figure><p><strong>Cause<\/strong><br\/>If your plant is wilting and the soil is bone-dry, it\u2019s likely from underwatering.<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br\/>If you are time-poor or forgetful, try using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/pot-plants\/best-self-watering-planters\">self-watering pot<\/a>.<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/Golden rules for watering house plants\">Golden rules for watering house plants<\/a><\/p><h3><strong>Mushrooms in the soil<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1396372047-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Mushrooms growing in house plant soil\" class=\"wp-image-163347\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Getty Images \/ Catherine McQueen<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><strong>Cause<\/strong><br\/>Mushrooms in the soil of a house plant aren\u2019t harmful to the plant but can indicate overwatering.<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br\/>There is no need to remove mushrooms, but\u00a0they are less likely to return if you water less and provide the plant with more light.<\/p><h3><strong>Orchid not blooming<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3><p><strong>Cause<\/strong><br\/>If your orchid isn&#8217;t blooming, a lack of light can be to blame.<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br\/>Make sure your orchid is on a windowsill (preferably not south-facing as the leaves can burn). Water only when the roots turn from green to silver-coloured.
