It celebrated inspiring projects from across the industry, with some of the biggest names in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/feature\/how-to-become-a-garden-designer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">garden design<\/a>\u00a0present. The winners included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardeners\/andy-sturgeon-interview\">Andy Sturgeon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/town-and-city\/lush-planting-stefano-marinaz\">Stefano Marinaz<\/a> and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/town-and-city\/james-hitchmough-sheffield-perennials\">James Hitchmough<\/a>. We round up the winners.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-the-sgd-garden-of-the-year-awardwinner-andy-sturgeon-fsgd\"><strong>The SGD Garden of the Year Award<\/strong><br\/><strong>Winner: Andy Sturgeon FSGD<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"\/><p>This most prestigious award, also known as the Grand Award, was presented to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardeners\/andy-sturgeon-interview\">Andy Sturgeon<\/a> for the\u00a0rooftop\u00a0gardens designed for London&#8217;s iconic Battersea Power Station.<\/p><p>This\u00a0series of\u00a0private communal gardens\u00a0was designed to be a single, cohesive space while seamlessly incorporating\u00a0a number of private gardens.\u00a0Respecting the heritage of the building and the constraints of the architecture were key to the success of the project, as was the creation of human scale spaces on this exposed London site.<br\/><br\/>The\u00a0judges described the project as &#8216;an\u00a0extraordinary piece of work&#8217;.\u00a0The scheme was also named as the winner in the\u00a0<strong>Roof, Podium or Raised Courtyard\u00a0<\/strong>category. In a separate category, Hobhouse Court designed by Andy<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Sturgeon received the award for best\u00a0<strong>Hardscape Design<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Read more about Andy Sturgeon&#8217;s Battersea scheme in the March 2024 issue of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/become-a-member\/\">Gardens Illustrated<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><h3><strong>Judges\u2019 Award,\u00a0Medium Residential Garden\u00a0Award<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Design for the Environment Award<\/strong><br\/><strong>Winner: Stefano Marinaz<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/09.2551CRF-3-Stefano-Marinaz-MSGD.-Photo-Alister-Thorpe.-jpg-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Church Barn by Stefano Marinaz\" class=\"wp-image-166168\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Alister Thorpe<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The judges called Stefano Marinaz&#8217;s project &#8216;a\u00a0beautiful, understated nod to modernity&#8217;.\u00a0They were particularly impressed with the &#8216;complex and interesting planting&#8217;, saying it was &#8216;a perfect example of how to be bold with big planting&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p><p>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/country\/church-barn-stefano-marinaz\">Stefano&#8217;s winning garden<\/a>.<\/p><h3>People\u2019s Choice Award<br\/>Winner: Adam Vetere MSGD<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/06.2524CRF-19-Adam-Vetere-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Treetop garden in Berkshire designed by Adam Vetere\" class=\"wp-image-166165\"\/><\/figure><p>The only award that is determined by a public vote went to\u00a0Adam Vetere\u00a0for a treetop garden in Berkshire.\u00a0The garden also won the\u00a0<strong>Small Residential<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Gardens Award. <\/strong>The judges deemed it &#8216;a\u00a0really good piece of design that demonstrated\u00a0great skill in working within a limited flat space at the top of a very steep site&#8217;.<\/p><h3>Large Residential Garden Award\u00a0<br\/>Winner: Robert Myers\u00a0<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/04.2668CR-1-Robert-Myers.-Photo.-Richard-Bloom-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Myers garden in Cambridgeshire\" class=\"wp-image-166164\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Richard Bloom<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This large garden was designed to\u00a0enhance\u00a0the setting of the house, improve\u00a0access and circulation while creating\u00a0new spaces and increasing\u00a0the wildlife value of the site.\u00a0The judges called it a &#8216;strong and confident garden&#8217; and remarked on the lovely combination of colours, texture and movement that created\u00a0a feeling of total immersion.<\/p><h3>Garden\u00a0Jewel Award\u00a0<br\/>Winner: George Cullis<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1810\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/07.2565CRF-4-george-cullis-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Garden designed by George Cullis\" class=\"wp-image-166166\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The judges called this small garden &#8216;a\u00a0lush oasis providing a truly immersive garden experience&#8217;. The panel was\u00a0impressed by the considered, cohesive and well-proportioned plan\u00a0and commented on the &#8216;bold mix of plants suited to the site, good textural consideration and an excellent use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\/trees-for-small-gardens\">trees<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p><h3>UK Commercial or Community Landscape<br\/>Winner: Matt Keightley<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2389\" height=\"1593\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/02.2741-CRF-15-Matt-Keightley.-Photo.-Alister-Thorpe.-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"Wellbeing Garden at RHS Wisley designed by Matt Keightley\" class=\"wp-image-166162\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Alister Thorpe<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The judges were impressed with the\u00a0strong design aesthetic, accomplished, well-considered planting and great use of texture, colour and shape in the new\u00a0Wellbeing Garden at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/the-arts-crafts-house-at-wisley-opens-to-the-public\">RHS Garden Wisley<\/a>, calling it a &#8216;complex and beautiful\u00a0scheme within a very difficult space.&#8217;<\/p><h3>International Commercial or Community\u00a0Landscape\u00a0&amp; Garden<br\/>Winner: Lulu Urquart and Adam Hunt<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/01.Garden-by-Adam-Hunt.-Photo.Jason-Ingram-Pistola.jpg\" alt=\"La Pistola by Adam Hunt\" class=\"wp-image-166161\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Masseria Pistola in Italy, designed by Adam Hunt, comprises of a series of distinct terraces, a farm shop, parking, and an amphitheatre for performance and picnics.\u00a0The judges remarked on the lovely balance between a human scale and a landscape scale and called it &#8216;an absolutely stunning project\u00a0with\u00a0an\u00a0exemplary quality of planting and forms and shapes that blend beautifully with the wider landscape and are perfectly suited to the climate&#8217;. You can read about La Pistola in an upcoming issue of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/become-a-member\/\">Gardens Illustrated<\/a><\/em>. <\/p><p><strong>Fresh Designer<\/strong>\u00a0<br\/><strong>Winner: Emily Crowley-Wroe\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/11.2579CR-5-Emily-Crowley-Wroe-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Garden designed by Emily Crowley-Wroe\" class=\"wp-image-166170\"\/><\/figure><p>Emily Crowley-Wroe<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was\u00a0named as the best<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Fresh Designer\u00a0for 2024.\u00a0The judges called\u00a0her modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/cottage-garden-flowers-best\">cottage garden<\/a> &#8216;a\u00a0bold, seductive design&#8217; remarking on the\u00a0cleverly laid out space that they felt had led to a dramatic transformation.<\/p><h3>SGD Lifetime Achievement Award <br\/>Winner: James Hitchmough<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/02\/RBD0508161364-ad144b8-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Professor James Hitchmough in his Sheffield garden\" class=\"wp-image-166397\"\/><\/figure><p>The\u00a0SGD Lifetime Achievement Award\u00a0is an award granted to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the landscape and garden design profession. The Award, which is gifted by the Council of the Society of Garden Designers, was presented\u00a0to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/features\/what-is-a-horticulturist\">horticulturist<\/a>, author and lecturer,\u00a0Professor James Hitchmough. Previous recipients have included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/news\/penelope-hobhouse-sdg-lifetime-achievement-2020\">Penelope Hobhouse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/features\/piet-oudolf-at-work\">Piet Oudolf<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/features\/legacy-beth-chatto\">Beth Chatto<\/a>, Christopher Bradley-Hole, Andrew Lawson, Fernando Caruncho, Robin Williams, David Stevens and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/news\/charles-jencks-dies-cosmic-speculation\">Charles Jencks<\/a>. Last year the award went to to SGD Fellow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/my-chelsea-sarah-eberle\">Sarah Eberle<\/a>. <\/p><p>Read about J<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/town-and-city\/james-hitchmough-sheffield-perennials\">ames Hitchmough&#8217;s garden in Sheffield<\/a> and watch his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigmarker.com\/immediate-media-co\/Gardens-Illustrated-Masterclass-A-planting-palette-for-the-future-with-James-Hitchmough?utm_bmcr_source=GIwebsite\"><em>Gardens Illustrated<\/em> Masterclass on Planting for the Future<\/a>. <\/p><h3><strong>Paper Landscapes<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1810\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/01\/14.2671CR-5-Holly-Birtles-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"SGD Paper Landscapes Award - Holly Birtles\" class=\"wp-image-166174\"\/><\/figure><p>The judges described Holly Birtles&#8217; entry as<strong>\u00a0&#8216;<\/strong>an exemplary piece of design, demonstrating an interesting and intelligent approach, strong themes and great environmental credentials.\u00a0 A model for the kind of approach we need to see going forward in the industry.&#8217; <\/p><h2>New awards<\/h2><p>The Society introduced two new Awards this year.\u00a0Matt Nichols was the first recipient of the\u00a0new\u00a0<strong>Designer &amp; Landscape Contractor Award\u00a0<\/strong>which was presented to him for a project titled &#8216;Living the Good Life&#8217; that he created in collaboration with Creative Gardens &amp; Driveways.<br\/><br\/>The new\u00a0<strong>Sustainable Product Award<\/strong>\u00a0which was judged by Rachel Bailey MSGD,\u00a0the SGD&#8217;s\u00a0lead on sustainability, was granted\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>PlantGrow Mulch.<\/strong> Rachel said PlantGrow Mulch<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was &#8216;a\u00a0brilliant example of how quality products can be created through a closed loop circular economy, considering both the inputs and outputs in a way we should all be doing&#8217;.<\/p><h2><strong>SGD Student Awards<\/strong><br\/><\/h2><p>Three standout designers student projects were selected for SGD\u00a0Awards this year as the very best in emerging talent.\u00a0<strong>Jake Sutcliffe<\/strong>\u00a0scooped the award in the Domestic Garden Design category,\u00a0<strong>Julia Hill\u00a0<\/strong>was presented with the award for best Commercial Garden Design and\u00a0<strong>Chloe Hamblen\u00a0<\/strong>was named winner in the Sustainable Garden Design category.\u00a0In addition two\u00a0special commendations were also announced.\u00a0The categories\u00a0were judged by SGD Fellows\u00a0David Stevens and Sarah Morgan and award-winning designer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/podcasts\/talking-gardens-tom-massey\">Tom Massey<\/a>, who was one of the first recipients of the student awards back in 2014. <\/p><p><br\/><\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has announced the winners at its annual at an event in London.
