Even some of the first double-flowered forms came from plants of <em>Helleborus<\/em> <em>torquatus<\/em> collected in the wild.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The wild species that went into creating our modern cultivars are also fascinating to grow. These hellebore flowers are not large, and are often green and sometimes have a fragrance. But while these species were used by breeders, hellebore enthusiasts also began to collect wild species for their own refinement and, sometimes, prolific flowering.<\/p><p>These wild hellebore species may not have the obvious impact of today\u2019s garden <a href=\"\/plants\/how-to-grow-hellebores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hellebore hybrids<\/a>, but those with a sense of history and an eye for detail will appreciate their role in the development of our favourite winter flowers and enjoy their quieter beauty.<\/p><p><strong>Jump to<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><a href=\"#link-name-a\">Where to plant species hellebores<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#link-name-b\">Caring for species hellebores<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#link-name-c\">Propagating species hellebores<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#link-name-d\">Where to buy species hellebores<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-group highlight-box is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><p><strong>What are species hellebores? <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Origins<\/strong> Europe, especially the Balkans, with outliers in China and along the Turkey-Syria border. Two species are native to the UK.<\/p><p><strong>Season<\/strong> Winter and spring. Size 20-40cm. Those hellebores with woody stems may reach 1m.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"2400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/01\/JI_170119_SpeciesHellebores_045-a2b2bda.jpg?crop=2px,372px,1595px,1063px\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15151\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><strong>Conditions<\/strong> Requirements vary. Many appreciate retentive soil in at least some shade, but will take full sun if the soil does not dry out. Others need sun and good drainage.<\/p><p><strong>Hardiness<\/strong> Many of these hellebores are fully hardy, with a hardiness rating of RHS H7, and suitable for gardens in USDA zones 4a-8b.<\/p><\/div><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-grow-species-hellebores\">How to grow species hellebores<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-to-plant-species-hellebores\"><a id=\"link-name-a\"\/>Where to plant species hellebores<\/h3><p>Hellebore species vary in their needs. The stemless species are usually happy in good garden soil in at least some <a href=\"\/garden-advice\/shady-gardens\/best-plants-for-shade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shade<\/a>; the more open the situation, the more moisture hellebores require.<\/p><p><em>Helleborus foetidus<\/em> and its cultivars are best in dappled shade or in a perennial border where taller, later-flowering plants provide summer shade.<\/p><p><em>Helleborus argutifolius<\/em> is unexpectedly adaptable, but the tall stems often need a <a href=\"\/garden-equipment\/tools\/plant-supports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plant support<\/a>. The much smaller, closely related <em>Helleborus<\/em> <em>lividus<\/em> appreciates frost protection, and thrives in <a href=\"\/garden-design\/9-new-terracotta-pots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terracotta pots<\/a> in a cold <a href=\"\/garden-equipment\/greenhouses-with-porches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greenhouse<\/a> or sheltered porch. The hybrid between the two, <em>Helleborus<\/em> x <em>sternii<\/em>, is a fine plant for winter containers, and some forms have exceptionally beautiful <a href=\"\/garden-advice\/shady-gardens\/foliage-plants-using-green-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foliage<\/a> as well as pretty flowers.<\/p><p>Hot, dry summers, along with protection from summer moisture and from winter frosts, are needed for the dramatic <em>Helleborus<\/em> <em>vesicarius<\/em>. A large <a href=\"\/garden-equipment\/tools\/cloche-best-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cloche<\/a> is usually sufficient for this purpose. Plants can either be grown in the <a href=\"\/plants\/planting-ideas\/garden-border-ideas-16-borders-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">border<\/a> or in a large pot in an unheated greenhouse.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-caring-for-species-hellebores\"><a id=\"link-name-b\"\/>Caring for species hellebores<\/h3><p>Cut off the foliage of both evergreen and deciduous hellebore species in late autumn or early winter to prevent the carry-over of disease.<\/p><p><a href=\"\/garden-advice\/how-to\/deadheading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deadhead<\/a> to prevent the proliferation of unwanted hybrid seedlings.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"2400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/01\/JI_170119_SpeciesHellebores_092-90b5132.jpg?crop=2px,204px,1595px,1063px\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15155\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"\/garden-advice\/how-to\/what-is-mulching-mulch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mulch<\/a> with weed-free organic matter in autumn helps maintain vigour and deter weeds.<\/p><p>Lift and divide stemless hellebore species in September or October and either replant at once or pot into 12cm pots and grown on for a year in a <a href=\"\/garden-equipment\/tools\/best-cold-frames\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold frame<\/a> or a sheltered site outside before planting.<\/p><p>Provide taller-stemmed varieties with a <a href=\"\/garden-equipment\/tools\/plant-supports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plant support,<\/a> especially in exposed locations.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-propagating-species-hellebores\"><a id=\"link-name-c\"\/>Propagating species hellebores<\/h3><p>Many of these hellebore forms can be propagated by seed, which should be sown promptly, as it ripens, in early summer. Seed needs a warm and moist period followed by cooling temperatures. Hellebore seedlings usually emerge in winter or early spring, but germination can be unpredictable.
