There is so much that is familiar \u2013 the oaks and the surrounding hills mean this garden could easily be in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardens-to-visit\/best-gardens-wales\">Wales<\/a> \u2013 and an initial overview of the plant selection is reminiscent of many a British garden. But, here it is as if someone has taken a range of familiar plants and arranged them in a way that is completely new. It is quite extraordinarily refreshing, and, one of the most stimulating gardens I have ever set foot in.<\/p><div aria-label=\"Carousel Gallery\" class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-carousel Lur is not just a garden, it is also the landscape architecture practice of I\u00f1igo Segurola Arregui and his partner Juan Iriarte Aguirrezabal, who have been working together making gardens in the Basque Country for many years while using the garden around their studio as a test bed for many of their ideas. \u201cWe wanted to use it for research,\u201d says I\u00f1igo, and indeed there is something of a feeling of many things being tried out: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/design-solutions-green-roofs\">green roof<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/meadow-plants-best-plants\">meadow<\/a>, colour combinations. But there is also a powerful energy and highly inventive creativity. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lur-the-garden-in-brief\"> Lur: the garden in brief<\/h2><p><strong>What<\/strong> Garden for landscape architecture practice Lur, featuring several imaginatively themed garden areas. <strong>Where<\/strong> Basque Country, northeast Spain. <strong>Size<\/strong> Two hectares. <strong>Soil<\/strong> Variable alluvial soil, mostly acidic. <strong>Climate<\/strong> Maritime temperate with high summer temperatures. <strong>Hardiness<\/strong> zone USDA 9.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8567\" height=\"5711\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/09\/38A0364-Edit-baeecd1.jpg\" alt=\"Lur: the garden of Spanish Spanish landscape architecture practice\" class=\"wp-image-22173\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Claire Takacs<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Foliage and flower combine to striking effect in this intimate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/pink-flowers\">pink<\/a>-themed garden centred around a large, black, concrete water feature \u2013 another example of the egg motif. In the foreground the purple leaves of<em> Ricinus communis<\/em> sit alongside the pink flowers of <em>Hibiscus moscheutos<\/em> \u2018Luna Red\u2019 and <em>Impatiens hawkeri<\/em>. Facing these the brown seedheads of <em>Astilbe chinensis<\/em> var. <em>taquetii<\/em> would have been searingly magenta flowers a month ago.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8688\" height=\"5792\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/09\/38A0403-246fb1a.jpg\" alt=\"Lur: the garden of Spanish Spanish landscape architecture practice\" class=\"wp-image-22174\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Claire Takacs<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In the Humedales, or wetlands area, exotic-looking waterside plants dominate: the enormous heart-shaped leaves of <em>Alocasia macrorrhiza<\/em> contrast with the fluffy heads of <em>Cyperus papyrus<\/em>. Behind is <em>Rhus typhina<\/em> \u2018Dissecta\u2019, a small tree easily kept within limits through hard pruning or coppicing, and behind that the rather outlandish forms of <em>Taxodium distichum<\/em> \u2018Cascade Falls\u2019, a weeping form of the deciduous conifer.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>There is a powerful energy and highly inventive creativity. All enclosed in the embrace of a valley, the sides clothed in a mixture of oak woodland and pasture<\/p><\/blockquote><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8688\" height=\"5792\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/09\/38A0638-73629db.jpg\" alt=\"Lur: the garden of Spanish Spanish landscape architecture practice\" class=\"wp-image-22175\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Claire Takacs<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The golden-variegated <em>Cortaderia selloana<\/em> \u2018Aureolineata\u2019 makes a useful rhythm plant in the Mirror Garden. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/rudbeckia-growing-care\">Rudbeckia<\/a> laciniata<\/em> \u2018Juligold\u2019 dominates the rear of the border here, and will do so for much of the late summer period with <em>Tagetes patula<\/em> forming bushy plants in front. The yellow theme is continued with the foliage of <em>Coleus scutellarioides<\/em> \u2018Golden Bedder\u2019 and at the very front the creeping <em>Lysimachia nummularia<\/em> \u2018Aurea\u2019.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8688\" height=\"5792\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2020\/09\/38A0735-df99b67.jpg\" alt=\"Lur: the garden of Spanish Spanish landscape architecture practice\" class=\"wp-image-22176\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Claire Takacs<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In one of two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/white-garden-ideas\">White Gardens<\/a>, planting takes centre stage with grass <em>Pennisetum alopecuroides<\/em> forming a prominent focal point surrounded by the umbel seedheads of <em>Ammi visnaga<\/em> and<em> Echinacea purpurea<\/em> \u2018Alba\u2019 in front, and the tall grass <em>Miscanthus sinensis<\/em> var. condensatus \u2018Cabaret\u2019 at the rear. Sandwiched between two areas of smaller, colour- or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/planting-ideas\/foliage-plants-using-green-garden\">foliage<\/a>-themed gardens are two large, ovoid gardens. At the top, is the area known as the Pradera, or meadow, an area of mown grass with egg-shaped patches of grass and wildflowers allowed to grow taller. Below this is the Mirror Garden with its egg-shaped pool and yellow colour theme.
