If you want to prolong the life of any flower use flower tubes, securely wired and discreetly hidden among the foliage.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-a\">How to make an Easter wreath<\/h2><p id=\"link-b\"><strong>You will need<\/strong><br\/>\u2022 Wreath base<br\/>\u2022 Reel wire or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/best-garden-twine\">twine<\/a><br\/>\u2022 Snips and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/tools\/best-secateurs\">secateurs<\/a><br\/>\u2022 Foliage and flowers<br\/>\u2022 Ribbon for hanging<br\/>\u2022 Flower tubes if required<br\/>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/what-are-lichens-types-uk\">Lichen<\/a> and moss to cover tubes<\/p><p id=\"link-c\"><strong>Step one<\/strong><\/p><p>I wanted a loose, twiggy structure reminiscent of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7c4CN0I4wzk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bird\u2019s nest<\/a> for the base, so I used several long lengths of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/30-of-the-best-climbing-plants\">Virginia creeper <\/a>(<em>Parthenocissus quinquefolia<\/em>) with its knobbly texture and wandering tendrils eased and twisted into a circle, held with a turn of wire. I start with the base foliage, heading upwards and downwards from my chosen focal point using branches with a natural curve to direct the viewer\u2019s eye \u2013 straight branches won\u2019t hold the gaze as long as those with some movement. Poke the stems through the wreath base so they sit securely and tie<br\/>in with spool wire or twine if needed.<\/p><p><strong>Step three<\/strong><\/p><p>I place the twiggy birch branches first, followed by curvaceous stems of ivy before adding the coppery tones of amelanchier, katsura and linear sprigs of evergreen honeysuckle. Arching sprays of bridal wreath and cherry follow before finishing with the faded, pollinated flowers of hellebores in delicious hues of green and plum. Keep standing back throughout the construction to make sure it\u2019s doing what you want it to.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 \u00c9va N\u00e9meth<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><strong>Step four<\/strong><\/p><p>Once completed, add a ribbon to complement your chosen colours. Try silk or velvet or a lavish combination of the two.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-d\">Plants to use for an Easter Wreath<\/h3><p><br\/>\u2022 <em><strong>Acer palmatum<\/strong><\/em> Use any green-leaved Japanese maple<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Amelanchier x lamarckii <\/em><\/strong>In March snowy mespilus offers both beautiful spring foliage and blossom.<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Betula pendula<\/em><\/strong> Use silver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\/best-birch-for-your-garden\">birch<\/a> when tight in bud and strewn with catkins<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Cercidiphyllum japonicum<\/em><\/strong> Use the copper-toned green foliage of katsura<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Hedera helix<\/em><\/strong> Common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/best-english-ivies\">ivy<\/a><br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Helleborus argutifolius <\/em><\/strong>Holly-leaved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/how-to-grow-hellebores\">hellebore<\/a>. Flowers January to April.<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Helleborus <\/em>x<em> hybridus <\/em><\/strong>Try Harvington hybrid cultivars, such as \u2018Harvington Single Lime\u2019 or \u2018Harvington Shades of the Night\u2019. Flowers February to April<br\/>\u2022 <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/honeysuckle-lonicera-how-to-grow\">Lonicera<\/a> ligustrina<\/strong><\/em><strong><em> <\/em>var. <em>yunnanensis<\/em><\/strong> Shrubby, evergreen honeysuckle.<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Parthenocissus quinquefolia<\/em><\/strong> Virginia creeper used for the base<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\/16-of-the-best-cherry-blossom\">Prunus<\/a><\/em><\/strong> Any species, such as cherry or plum, with good blossom<br\/>\u2022 <strong><em>Spiraea<\/em> \u2018Arguta<\/strong>\u2019 Bridal wreath with pretty white flowers from April to May<\/p><p>You can substitute any flowers and foliage that work well together. Alternative coppery spring foliage includes beech, hornbeam or oak.
