Here&#8217;s what we should be worried about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The UK&#8217;s butterfly winners and losers of 2023 have been revealed following the announcement of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 03 April 2024 at 05:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The latest results from the annual UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/features\/big-butterfly-count\">Butterfly<\/a> Monitoring Scheme have been released, with a mixed view of butterflies throughout the UK. <\/p><p><strong>You may also like<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/butterflies-best-plants\">Best plants for butterflies<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/planting-butterfly-moth-larvae\">Moth and butterfly friendly planting<\/a> <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/features\/identify-garden-butterflies\">Ten garden butterflies to identify<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>The scheme, which is led by Butterfly Conservation and several other charities showed that for many butterflies species, 2023 was a great year. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterfly had a worrying year in 2023 \u00a9\u00a0 Iain H Leach<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Half of the 58 species had a better than average year, with the Chequered Skipper, Brimstone and Large Blue all recording their best year since 1976 &#8211; when the scheme began. <\/p><p>Red Admiral, which is a migratory species and has begun to overwinter in the UK as the climate has warmed, increased its numbers by 318 per cent at monitored sites since 1976. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1509\" height=\"1006\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/04\/Large-Blue-c-Keith-Warmington1.jpg\" alt=\"Large Blue butterfly\" class=\"wp-image-168962\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Large Blue butterfly has had its best year yet in the UK \u00a9 Keith Warmington<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Not all butterfly species are faring well, however, and there were worrying results for certain butterflies in 2023, including the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and the Small Tortoiseshell. In 28 years of monitoring, the lowest numbers of these were recorded, declining by 71 per cent and 82 per cent respectively. However Small Tortoiseshell did seem to do well in Northern Ireland. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/04\/Ringlet-c-Tim-Melling-Butterfly-Conservation.jpg\" alt=\"Ringlet butterfly\" class=\"wp-image-168963\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ringlet butterfly had a bad year in the UK in 2023 \u00a9 Tim Melling, Butterfly Conservation<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Green-veined White and Ringlet both had a poor year, which could be down to drought from the previous summer. While The Large Blue, which was reintroduced into the UK after becoming extinct in the 1970s saw its best year yet. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2211\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/04\/Red-Admiral-c-Mark-Searle-Butterfly-Conservation-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Red Admiral butterfly\" class=\"wp-image-168965\"\/><\/figure><p>Dr Richard Fox, head of science at Butterfly Conservation, said: \u201cButterfly numbers fluctuate naturally from year to year, largely due to the weather, but the long-term trends of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/gardens\/gardeners\/phil-sterling-butterflies\">UK butterflies<\/a> are mainly driven by human activity, including habitat damage and destruction, pesticide use, pollution and climate change. <\/p><p>&#8220;By monitoring long-term butterfly trends we can learn about the impact of climate change and other factors on our native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/attract-wildlife-garden\">wildlife<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><p>Dr Marc Botham, Butterfly Ecologist at the UK Centre for Ecology &amp; Hydrology, added: &#8220;The mixed results this year emphasise the need for continued monitoring and conservation efforts to protect these important species and their habitats.\u201d<\/p><p>UKBMS, which began in 1976, is one of the world&#8217;s longest-running insect monitoring schemes. The data is collected by skilled volunteers who monitor 3,316 sites across the UK.
