The eleven best Show Gardens at Chelsea 2024<\/a><\/li><\/ul>
The garden features over 50 native trees \u2013 the most ever in a Chelsea show garden – and is inspired by the Japanese art of forest bathing<\/a>, which has many health benefits. During her research, Ula met Martin, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy (MD) in his twenties. \u201cOutside the hospital there was nowhere to sit and process his diagnosis. He had to sit in his car. I wanted to create a space where a person can breathe and process their thoughts.\u201d The garden subtly tells the charity\u2019s story via its hard landscaping.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure>Ula said of her win: “I am so excited and thrilled for the whole Muscular Dystrophy UK community, and all the guys who worked on the construction team, and it is amazing, because it is my first Chelsea Flower Show garden. Very excited. “<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">RHS Chelsea Flower Show – Best Show Garden Winner – Muscular Dystrophy UK \u2013 Forest Bathing Garden, designed by Ula Maria.Ula is pictured receiving her award from RHS Director General Clare Matterson and Monty Don. – \u00a9 Oliver Dixon<\/figcaption><\/figure>On paper, the Best in Show garden has achieved the highest score on the judges\u2019 checklist, which covers nine criteria, including design, spatial composition, quality of the build and planting excellence. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/show-winning-gardens\">Discover what it takes to win Best in Show at Chelsea.<\/a><\/p>RHS Chair of Show Garden Judges Liz Nicholson said: \u201cThis has been one of the toughest years to judge, with exemplary designs and much to enjoy in design detailing. There are some fantastic narratives and storytelling amongst the gardens. Ula\u2019s design is a wonderful slice of forest edge brought to the heart of the RHS Chelsea showground. It is immersive, relaxing and calming. Its use of flint, which is a difficult material to work with, is notable, creating possibly the biggest insect habitat I\u2019ve ever seen. Coupled with faultless planting to make an innovative, artistic, and precise garden, it is a clear winner.\u201d<\/p>After the show the garden will be relocated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idrm.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine in Oxford.<\/a><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/Chelsea2024__H8A0083_May-19-2024-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Muscular Dystrophy UK \u2013 Forest Bathing Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Designed by Ula Maria \u00a9 Neil Hepworth<\/figcaption><\/figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/small-gardens\/ula-maria-garden\">Ula Maria<\/a> initially had in mind a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/chelsea-flower-show-sanctuary-gardens-2024\">Sanctuary Garden <\/a>for this year\u2019s show, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/project-giving-back-chelsea-flower-show\">Project Giving Back<\/a> and the RHS loved the concept and offered her a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/show-gardens-2024-full-list\">Show Garden on Main Avenue. <\/a>\u201cIt snowballed,\u201d says Ula, 31, who was RHS Young Designer of the Year in 2017. Given that she\u2019s now won Best in Show, beating off stiff competition from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/national-garden-scheme-garden\">Tom Stuart-Smith<\/a> (who also created a woodland style garden that was widely tipped to win, and for whom Ula used to freelance) \u2013 that is now proving something of an understatement.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/Chelsea2024__H8A0099_May-19-2024-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Muscular Dystrophy UK \u2013 Forest Bathing Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Helen Olney’s designs are inspired by the landscape of Myanmar.<\/p>Best Construction Award went to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/to-the-bridge-garden-guide\">Terrence Higgins Trust Bridge to 2030 garden<\/a>, designed by Matthew Childs, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/chelsea-flower-show-2024-balcony-and-container-gardens-announced\">Best Balcony and Container Garden<\/a> went to the Ecotherapy Garden designed by Tom Bannister.
