From the headline winners of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/plant-of-the-year-2024-winner\">Plant of the Year<\/a>, to tiny ground cover foliage nestling in the corner of a show garden, Chelsea really is all about the plants, and this year seemed to offer a particularly varied plant palette. This year\u2019s must-have choice was <em>Valerian officinalis<\/em>, appearing on many of the gardens. Suitable for full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/planting-ideas\/plants-for-full-sun\">sun<\/a> or light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/shady-gardens\/best-plants-for-shade\">shade<\/a>, this umbellifer has upright, branching stems with umbles of white\/pink-tinged flowers above a filigree foliage. A great perennial umbel that this year seemed to fit Chelsea\u2019s remit of plant with purpose \u2013 the leaves can be used in herbal remedies and the flowers are rich in nectar.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-craspedia-globosa\"><em>Craspedia globosa<\/em><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1426\" height=\"744\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-22-at-13.56.28.png\" alt=\"Craspedia globosa\" class=\"wp-image-172863\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Craspedia globosa<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Bobbing along through Ann-Marie Powell\u2019s uplifting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/octavia-hill-garden-guide\">Octavia Hill Garden<\/a>, this little charmer isn\u2019t often seen in show gardens \u2013 in fact I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve ever seen it. More typically spheres come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/how-to-grow-alliums\">alliums<\/a>, so this felt as if Ann-Marie has given the form new Chelsea life. Craspedia have narrow, silvery-grey leaves on wiry stems. The drumsticks are bright yellow and are popular in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-equipment\/lifestyle\/best-dried-flowers\">dried flower<\/a> displays. I can\u2019t help wondering if these cheerful, small bobbles caught the imagination of the schoolchildren who were also judging the gardens and chose Ann-Marie\u2019s as their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/childrens-choice-anounced\">Children&#8217;s Choice<\/a> winner.<\/p><p\/><p\/><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cytisus-lena\"><em>Cytisus<\/em> \u2018Lena\u2019<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/IMG_5607-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Cytisus 'Lena'\" class=\"wp-image-172806\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Stephanie Mahon<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Back with a bang, broom had definitely fallen out of garden favour but with drier summers (assuming you have well-drained soil to also cope with overly wet winter) we could be about to see brooms make a come-back. <em>Cytisus<\/em> \u2018Lena\u2019 featured on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/podcasts\/talking-gardens-miria-harris\">Miria Harris<\/a>&#8216; garden for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/stroke-association-garden-guide\">Stroke Association<\/a>. The colour blend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/best-red-flowers-plants\">red<\/a>, orange and yellow packed a punch on the garden, bouncing the eye through the space. The arching stems fit perfectly with our more relaxed approach to gardens, away from more formally shaped shrubs. I also spotted \u2018Boskop Ruby\u2019 on the Burncoose nursery stand \u2013 an intense ruby red.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-digitalis-appleblossom\"><em>Digitalis<\/em> \u2018Appleblossom\u2019<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/Digitalis-Appleblossom-2-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Digitalis 'Appleblossom'\" class=\"wp-image-172830\"\/><\/figure><p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/foxgloves-for-colour-and-structure\">foxglove<\/a> featured on <em>Digitalis<\/em> experts The Botanic Nursery stand. Perennial foxgloves are proving increasingly popular for their slightly more predictable habit than the exuberantly self-seeding <em>Digitalis purpurea<\/em>. They also suit containers well, just as this one does, growing to just 60cm. It has spires of soft pink flowers with a characterful split corolla, emerging in May and lasting until July. Works well in sun or part shade.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-geranium-nodosum-fielding-s-folly\"><em>Geranium nodosum<\/em> \u2018Fielding\u2019s Folly\u2019<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1774\" height=\"1331\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/Geranium-nodosum-Fieldings-Folly-1-edited-1.jpg\" alt=\"Geranium nodosum 'Fielding's Folly'\" class=\"wp-image-172827\"\/><\/figure><p>Spotted on Derry Watkins\u2019 Special Plants nursery stand in the Great Pavilion, this little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/best-hardy-geraniums\">hardy geranium<\/a> was really striking. <em>Geranium nodosums<\/em> are brilliant doers with \u2018Fielding\u2019s Folly\u2019 adding to its serrated, bright green leaves, eye-catching, velvety-purple flowers. These repeat flower from May through to September and grow happily in light shade or sun. Derry adds that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/organic-slug-control-ten-best\">slug<\/a> resistant and \u2018so easy to grow\u2019. That pretty much seals the deal for me.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-saruma-henryi\"><em>Saruma henryi<\/em><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/IMG_5642-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Saruma henryi\" class=\"wp-image-172817\"\/><\/figure><p>Garden writer and <em>Gardens Illustrated<\/em> contributor Jodie Jones referred to this plant on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/podcasts\/talking-gardens-tom-stuart-smith\">Tom Stuart-Smith<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/national-garden-scheme-garden\">National Garden Scheme<\/a> garden (it was also in a pot on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/muscular-dystrophy-garden-guide-uk\">Ula Maria&#8217;s Muscular Dystrophy UK garden<\/a>) as feeling \u2018like a box of baby hamsters\u2019. Who can resist such a description? This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/ground-cover-best-plants\">ground cover<\/a> perennial, native to shady woodland in China, has softly hairy, heart-shaped leaves in pale green. Adding sparkle to Tom\u2019s understorey were the plant\u2019s pretty yellow, three-petalled flowers. It was Tom Stuart-Smith who brought to light for many gardeners the now oft-seen wild ginger <em>Asarum europaeum<\/em>, so it seems fitting that <em>Saruma<\/em>, a near relative of <em>Asarum<\/em>, should be catching everyone\u2019s eye on Tom\u2019s garden this year. <em>Saruma<\/em> is in fact an anagram of <em>Asarum<\/em>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-agave-praying-hands\"><em>Agave<\/em> \u2018Praying Hands\u2019<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/MANG_PRAYINGHA_S51065-1-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Agave 'Praying Hands'\" class=\"wp-image-172820\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Agave &#8216;Praying Hands&#8217; \u00a9 Thompson and Morgan<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Winner of third place in RHS Plant of Year category, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-advice\/how-to\/how-to-grow-succulents\">succulent<\/a> is likely to find favour across the gardening generations. <em>Agave<\/em> \u2018Praying Hands\u2019 perfectly describes the shape of the upcurved leaves, which form a tight, upright, teardrop shape, each leaf tipped in a maroon spike. Although this is hardy to -5 degrees C, I can see it sitting well with many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/house-plants\/how-to-style-house-plants\">house plant<\/a> collectors too. It requires little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/house-plants\/watering-house-plants-guide\">watering<\/a>, making it an easy introduction to succulent growing. I\u2019m told it also looks cute when its small.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chionanthus-retusus\"><em>Chionanthus retusus<\/em><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/Web-Use-Chelsea2024_2Z5A0165-2_May-19-2024.jpg\" alt=\"The RHS No Adults Allowed Garden designed by Harry Holding\" class=\"wp-image-172823\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Sarah Cuttle<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It wasn\u2019t just the slide that was a talking point on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/podcasts\/talking-gardens-harry-holding\">Harry Holding<\/a>\u2019s RHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/chelsea-repurposed-children-judges\">No Adults Allowed garden. <\/a>The Chinese fringe tree was causing a stir too. This slow-growing tree grabs attention in late spring when it produces clusters of fragrant white, long-petalled flowers that give the tree a fringed effect. Textured bark and glossy leaves add to the tree\u2019s attractions too. It wasn\u2019t the first time the tree had featured at Chelsea \u2013 but it was the first time it had been seen in flower, more usually flowering earlier in the year. It thrives moist soil in full sun. The tree won the Tree of the Show Award, with a trophy presented to Harry by tree expert Tony Kirkham.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-acer-tataricum-subsp-ginnala\"><em>Acer tataricum<\/em> subsp. <em>ginnala<\/em><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/05\/IMG_4952-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Cascading water features and plunge pool in Tom Bannister's The Ecotherapy Garden\" class=\"wp-image-172761\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cascading water features and plunge pool in Tom Bannister&#8217;s The Ecotherapy Garden &#8211; \u00a9 Molly Blair<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>I spotted this tree when it arrived at Chelsea the week before the show and even amid the chaos it caught my attention. It was a delight then to see it holding pride of place in the gold-medal winning (and Best in Category winning) The Ecotherapy Garden designed by Tom Bannister in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/chelsea\/balcony-container-2024-full-list\">Balcony &amp; Container <\/a>section. Noted as a tree choice with good pollution and drought resistance, it grows well as a multistem, making it a good choice for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/trees\/trees-for-small-gardens\">smaller spaces<\/a> and in containers (as here).
