I like <strong>to sow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/biennials-sowing-when-how\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biennials<\/a> and perennials now or next month<\/strong>, so that they reach a good size and can be planted out before winter arrives. I can\u2019t resist the elegant spires of <a href=\"\/plants\/foxgloves-for-colour-and-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digitalis<\/a> in all its forms, from charming biennials, such as <em>Digitalis purpurea<\/em> \u2018Sutton\u2019s Apricot\u2019, to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/flowers\/fast-flowers-quick-perennials-from-seed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perennial<\/a> species, including <em>Digitalis lutea<\/em> and <em>Digitalis parviflora<\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Delicate <em>Verbascum blattaria <\/em>f.<em> albiflorum<\/em> is something I always like to have, informally dotting it around the edges of borders and paths.<\/p><p>For cutting or bedding out, it is worth sowing <a href=\"\/plants\/flowers\/dianthus-grow-propagate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sweet Williams<\/a> (<em>Dianthus barbatus<\/em>) and my preferred selections would be the vibrant \u2018Oeschberg\u2019, sumptuously dark \u2018Sooty\u2019, and the bi-colour \u2018Purple Crown\u2019 and \u2018Sweet Pink Magic\u2019.<\/p><p>In the vegetable patch there may be some <strong>succession sowing of beetroots and carrots or salad leaves and herbs<\/strong>, especially if your existing crops are harvesting now or beginning to bolt.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/06\/JI_171018_OllieHutson_016-3630ace-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Beetroot Cylindra\" class=\"wp-image-173337\" title=\"Kitchen Garden Series - Ollie Hutson (17th October 2018)\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Beetroot Cylindra<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Any last-minute <strong>planting out to fill the odd gap<\/strong> can also be done now and I find using quick-growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/annual-plants-what-which-hardy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">annuals<\/a> such as <em>Bupleurum rotundifolium<\/em>, calendula and tagetes very successful, although it\u2019s worth remembering these plants will need additional watering to help them establish, especially if the weather is hot and dry.<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Head gardener Benjamin Pope explains what you should be planting in June.
