Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/biennials-sowing-when-how\">biennials<\/a> should have already been sown but, I\u2019d still give <a href=\"\/plants\/foxgloves-for-colour-and-structure\/\">foxgloves<\/a> and <a href=\"\/plants\/summer\/verbascum-how-to-grow\/\">verbascums<\/a> a go; both will grow quickly in the cooling months to come.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Digitalis purpurea &#8216;Glittering Prizes&#8217; \u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>However, now is a good time to sow <a href=\"\/plants\/autumn\/\">autumn<\/a> and <a href=\"\/plants\/winter\/\">winter<\/a> salads and leaves, so that they reach a substantial size before the days become short. Good cultivars include lettuces \u2018Winter Density\u2019 and \u2018Winter Gem\u2019, grown alongside mustard \u2018Red Frills\u2019, rocket and the very hardy lamb\u2019s lettuce \u2018Favor\u2019. I also like to do a sowing of beetroot, where the hardy earthy leaves make great additions to salads.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/06\/JI_171018_OllieHutson_016-3630ace-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Beetroot Cylindra\" class=\"wp-image-173337\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Beetroot Cylindra \u00a9 Jason Ingram<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Given a little protection (fleece or polythene tunnel) they will all happily crop through autumn and winter and into early spring.
