Plant great drifts of them, if you can keep the squirrels off. Height 10cm. Hardiness rating RHS H5, USDA 3a-8b.<\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alisonjenkins.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alison Jenkins<\/a>, Garden designer<\/strong><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tulipa-bruine-wimpel\"><em>Tulipa<\/em> \u2018Bruine Wimpel\u2019<\/h3><p>Sometimes sold as<em> Tulipa <\/em>Malaika, this is a subtle, single, late tulip, which fades from smoky-pink to rust. Looks good with the dark-red tones of <em>Tulipa<\/em> &#8216;Ronaldo&#8217; and <em>Anthriscus sylvestris<\/em> &#8216;Ravenswing&#8217;. Spring bulb that flowers in April. Height 60cm. Hardiness USDA 3a-8b.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-narcissus-jenny\"><em>Narcissus<\/em> \u2018Jenny\u2019<\/h3><p>The graceful form and soft tones of this daffodil work well when naturalised in grass. It has creamy-white, swept-back petals with a pale-yellow trumpet. Height 30cm. Hardiness RHS H6, USDA 3a-8b.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-allium-nigrum\"><em>Allium nigrum<\/em><\/h3><p>Flowering in early June, these give height and impact before many of the perennials get going. The off-white domed heads have a distinctive green centre in each of the many flowers. Height 75cm. Hardiness rating RHS H5, USDA 5a-9b.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-muscari-latifolium\"><em>Muscari latifolium<\/em><\/h3><p>The two-tone flowers are strikingly unusual and look as though they have been dipped in violet sherbert. Flowering in March, they look good popping up through the black grass, <em>Ophiopogon planiscapus <\/em>\u2018Nigrescens\u2019. Height 20cm. Hardiness rating RHS H5, USDA 6a-9b.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fritillaria-assyriaca\"><em>Fritillaria assyriaca<\/em><\/h3><p>Best planted in old terracotta pots so you can bring them indoors where the subtlety of the mahogany flowers, tipped with yellow ochre, and the elegant form of their linear leaves can be appreciated up close. Flowers in April. Height 30cm. Hardiness rating USDA 7a-9b.<\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/spring\/fritillaria-best-how-to-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don&#8217;t miss our piece on everything you need to know about fritillaria<\/a><\/strong><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-narcissus-segovia\"><em>Narcissus<\/em> \u2018Segovia\u2019<\/h3><p>This scented, miniature daffodil has pure-white petals with an unusual flat, lemon cup in March. Plant some in a pot near your door and they will provide and air of zingy spring freshness every time you pass by. Height 25cm. Hardiness RHS H6, USDA 3a-9b.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tulipa-havran\"><em>Tulipa<\/em> \u2018Havran\u2019<\/h3><p>An elegant tulip with two to three inky, dark-purple flowers per stem. It flowers earlier than <em>Tulipa<\/em> &#8216;Queen of Night&#8217; (mid April) and works well in pots with <em>Euphorbia amygdaloides<\/em> &#8216;Purpurea&#8217; and the vibrant orange <em>Tulipa<\/em> &#8216;Ballerina&#8217;. 45cm.<\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nigeldunnett.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nigel Dunnett<\/a>, Professor of Planting Design at the University of Sheffield<\/strong><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-narcissus-petrel\"><em>Narcissus<\/em> \u2018Petrel\u2019<\/h3><p>I have fallen in love with pure-white narcissi in general, and now use them widely to illuminate shady places. <em>Narcissus<\/em> &#8216;Petrel&#8217;, however is one of the best. Set it off against the acid-yellow of <em>Euphorbia<\/em> and plant with <em>Tulipa<\/em> &#8216;Burgundy&#8217; for a sumptuous combination. Flowers early to mid May. Height 55cm.
