They are adaptable to a range of neutral to alkaline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/garden-design\/resources\/what-is-soil-and-how-can-gardeners-improve-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soils<\/a> \u2013 although they prefer not to sit wet during the winter and resent drying out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/plants\/summer\/summer-flowers-best-to-plant-grow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summer<\/a>. They need to be grown on in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill until they are large enough to plant out in spring, after any risk of frost has passed.<\/p> <p>You can buy established young plants in early to mid-summer. These can be planted straight into borders and pots and will flower later in the season.<\/p> <p>Mature plants in flower are available at garden centres in late summer and early <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardensillustrated.com\/features\/when-does-autumn-start\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autumn<\/a> for instant impact in a border. Ideally, don&#8217;t plant later than mid-September, so that they can establish before a cold, wet winter.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-f\">How to care for hardy chrysanthemums<\/h3> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1597\" height=\"1198\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/11\/JI_231018_Chrysanthemums_071-b6247b2-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Chrysanthemum 'Poesie'\" class=\"wp-image-180294\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Chrysanthemum &#8216;Poesie&#8217; &#8211; \u00a9 Jason Ingram <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>Mulch after planting with well rotted compost or manure.<\/p> <p>Ensure that the soil doesn&#8217;t dry out around your chrysanthemum plants \u2013 but don&#8217;t let it become waterlogged, as chrysanthemums do not enjoy sitting in waterlogged soil.<\/p> <p>In early summer, pinch out or &#8216;stop&#8217; your chrysanthemums to encourage them to branch out and produce lots of flowers. Once they&#8217;ve reached around 20cm tall, remove the main growing point; you can also do the same to the tips of the sideshoots.<\/p> <p>Feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser from late spring until the buds appear.<\/p> <p>Mulch in autumn to protect the roots over winter.<\/p> <p>Stake taller cultivars, which can be flattened by strong winds. Shorter types are usually all right, especially if they are supported by the plants around them.<\/p> <p>Once the plant has finished flowering in late autumn, cut the whole plant down to 20cm from the base.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Propagate in spring. But this is the worst case scenario: if you buy from a reputable seller, plants shouldn\u2019t have it. Large, half-double flowers of bronzy orange, fading to a warm yellow at the base and tip of each petal appear in September and last until November. 70cm.<\/p> <h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Chrysanthemum<\/em> \u2018Bienchen\u2019<\/h4> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1418\" height=\"1064\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2024\/11\/JI_231018_Chrysanthemums_031-e30fac8-edited-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-180399\"\/> <\/figure> <p>Introduced in 1974, this chrysanthemum&#8217;s name translates as \u2018little bee\u2019, which perfectly describes the golden yellow pompoms marked with a reddish brown heart in September.
