Plants that sing during the winter<\/a> should be treasured far more than those that are part of the chorus\u00a0of high summer. At the start of winter,\u00a0one of the moments I look forward to is seeing the first few tentative flowers on the\u00a0Clematis<\/a> cirrhosa<\/em> that covers the woodshed. I know that by January the plant will be a clematis blanket of creamy-yellow bells. Clematis cirrhosa<\/em> is one of several winter flowering clematis: evergreen and semi-evergreens that, although they have no formal botanical grouping, all flower during the winter and early spring.<\/p>\n

Tips on growing winter flowering clematis<\/h2>\n

Hardiness<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Clematis<\/em>\u00a0x\u00a0cartmanii<\/em> and associated hybrids were originally thought too tender to grow outdoors in Britain. In fact winter flowering clematis will thrive in sheltered places that do not drop below -5\u00b0C during the winter, as long as they are protected from cold, drying winds. In colder areas, grow in pots in cool greenhouses or conservatories.<\/p>\n

Cold winds are also the enemy of\u00a0Clematis armandii<\/em>\u00a0so choose a sheltered spot in sun or part-shade.<\/p>\n

Where to plant winter flowering clematis<\/h3>\n

In general winter flowering clematis prefer moist conditions but Clematis cirrhosa<\/em> must\u00a0be kept dry, especially during the winter. An ideal place to plant it\u00a0is on a south or west-facing\u00a0house wall where the eaves of\u00a0the roof protect the soil from heavy downpours.<\/p>\n

Clematis need rich, moist\u00a0soil with a cool root-run, so plant low-growing shrubs or perennials<\/a> close to the base to shade the soil.\u00a0Clematis armandii<\/em>\u00a0needs to be well fed, so apply a generous mulch<\/a>\u00a0of compost<\/a> every autumn.<\/p>\n

Plant supports<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Clematis cirrhosa<\/em> will need support at first by tying the stems in to 1m canes. As it becomes established it will twine itself around wires, posts or trellis. Clematis<\/em> x cartmanii<\/em> hybrids\u00a0are not twining plants so they are unable to support themselves when grown as climbers. They can be left to sprawl along the ground or to flow over the edge of pots.<\/p>\n

How to prune winter flowering clematis to control growth<\/h3>\n

Clematis armandii<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Clematis cirrhosa<\/em>\u00a0are vigorous plants that need regular pruning to be kept under control.<\/p>\n

  • They flower on growth made the previous year, so wait until they have finished flowering before doing any pruning.<\/li>\n
  • Cut back growth to about 1m below the area you want the plant to cover.<\/li>\n
  • After three or four years both\u00a0Clematis armandii<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Clematis cirrhosa<\/em>\u00a0may develop dense, woody \u2018bird nest\u2019 growth. Cut back about one third of the plant to the base and repeat the process on the other two thirds in subsequent years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>

    How to prune winter flowering clematis to stimulate flowering<\/h3>\n

    Clematis<\/em>\u00a0\u2018Early Sensation\u2019, and the\u00a0cartmanii<\/em>\u00a0hybrids produce\u00a0so many flowers that they often exhaust themselves and generate little in the way of new growth.\u00a0To keep the plants vigorous and healthy, prune them in two stages:<\/p>\n

    • Trim clematis immediately after the flowers have finished, to remove the dying flower heads and prevent any energy being lost in seed production.<\/li>\n
    • At the end of May, cut the whole plant back to about 50cm from the soil, to encourage new growth and prevent the plant from becoming bare and woody at the base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>

      How to prune winter flowering clematis to thicken growth<\/h3>\n

      Clematis paniculata<\/em>\u00a0tends to be spindly, but looks better with bushy growth.<\/p>\n

      • For a few years after planting, cut back to 60cm from the ground.<\/li>\n
      • Once it has become bushy, allow it to grow into the size you want and then trim it back each year after flowering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>
