Portrait of an Antique

Sarah Vanrenen’s 1800s mirror

INTERVIEW & ILLUSTRATION SJ AXELBY (@sjaxelby)

This mirror is my favourite belonging of all time. It is very delicate and has probably moved house about six times since I bought it from Judy Greenwood in the Fulham Road, in about 1994. At the time I lived in a flat with very high ceilings and beautiful cornices, but I didn’t even own a sofa. The glass is very, very thick and so beautiful –I completely fell in love with it. Apart from being dragged around antiques shops throughout my entire childhood, my first memory of actively scouring antiques shops for the sheer love of it and for myself, was in that little shop of Judy’s. I can remember every inch of it; it was my go-to just as I started my interior design career. In my last flat, I had the mirror in the kitchen/dining room, which also had high ceilings but was modern, so there was an element of surprise. It was actually the only place with a wall big enough to take it! Sarah Vanrenen is an interior designer.
