Arcadia Antiques

If you’re after a wicker basket, a good place to start hunting for one is Arcadia Antiques run by Jack Harness from a farm in Warwickshire. Faux bamboo pieces also sometimes feature in the vast assortment of stock, which focuses on decorative furniture. arcadiaantiques.co.uk

Beall & Bell

This Insta account offers a lovely mix of pale and interesting pieces, many of which tend to be pine, bamboo, cane, rattan and wicker – big stars of interiors at the moment. We love the wicker floor lamps sold recently. It’s New York-based, but worth perusing for inspiration and wicker appreciation. @beallandbell

Bohome Interiors

Becky Wilson launched her Instagram business Bohome Interiors in 2020. Scrolling through her grid is a delight, as she shares inspiring interior shots, her handmade textile and upholstery pieces, and her vintage and antique finds. She has a penchant for wicker, so every so often she’ll sell wicker baskets, lampshades and furniture. @bohomeinteriors

Lorfords

A collection of multiple dealers and hundreds of items, Lorfords usually has something you’re on the lookout for and there’s a good offering when it comes to wicker. Current pieces on the website include an early 20th-century wicker mannequin, French Champagne harvest baskets, chairs and a garden table. lorfordsantiques.com; @lorfordsantiq

Manfred Schotten Antiques

An excellent Father’s Day present could be a vintage wicker fishing creel, perhaps, which appear among Cotswolds dealer Manfred Schotten’s antique sporting finds. sportantiques.co.uk; @manfredschottenantiques

Tallboy Interiors

As vintage and antique wicker pieces are not always bountiful, be sure to check in on Matt Dixon’s inventory from time to time, as wicker pieces appear now and then, particularly chairs and the odd screen. tallboyinteriors.co.uk; @tallboyinteriors

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR!

Alice Roberton talks to Richard Burgoin of Arthur Swallow Fairs…

‘Arthur Swallow Fairs was established in 1995 by my late father Peter Burgoin. My brother Marc and I developed a taste for the ‘trade’ pretty young. We helped with event set-up and learnt a lot about what makes a good fair and, in 2008, we took over the running of the business along with my wife, Anna. With our young children already showing a healthy interest in fairs, it’s throughand-through a family business.

‘Hosting everything from fastpaced one-day markets to relaxed three-day boutique home shows, our focus is aimed at the antique, salvage and vintage market. What’s great is that these fairs, markets and shows are suitable for everyone, from collectors through to home renovators; we firmly believe that antiques are for everyone, so we welcome families and encourage the younger generation to discover the joys of hunting for beautiful old pieces. The environmental and financial benefits of buying ‘preloved’ is huge and we’re seeing more and more people of all ages choosing old over new.

‘Our three-day Decorative Home & Salvage Show 17th–19th June at Beale Park in Berkshire is our newest. Launched three years ago, it takes place in a stunning Thames-side field just outside Pangbourne. With on-site catering and a bar, the atmosphere is always relaxed and a good browse through the 70-plus stands could see you picking up a £1 bargain or making a serious investment. At last year’s show I bought a Victorian oil painting of a handsome bearded chap in the most beautiful gilt frame – our home is full of interesting old pieces, but this is definitely my favourite purchase.

‘After 11 years, I still get excited when we open the gate on the first day – I’ll never tire of watching a queue of happy faces enter in anticipation of falling in love with pieces for their homes and gardens. Our exhibitors, many of whom come down from the north specially to exhibit with us, make a huge effort to save their best stock and set their stands up beautifully. If you buy something large, you can drive on-site to pick it up or the dealer may be able to arrange delivery. Either way, there is always help on hand.’

AUCTION INSIDER

Joe Robinson

We peek into the busy working life of the head of house sales and private collections at Dreweatts in Berkshire

As children we’d often be taken on visits to stately homes and I would always want to look inside, rather than play in the adventure playgrounds. Belton House and Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire were our local houses, and on walking holidays to Derbyshire we’d visit Chatsworth. I read History at university and, in my third year, had an epiphany that working in the art market could marry my interest in beautiful things with a business element. I love the fast pace of the auction world and the fact that no day is the same.

My first job in 2016 was working for the deputy chairman of Christie’s. He was an amazing mentor and I learnt so much. I joined Dreweatts’ business development department in 2018, and have since helped to build the House Sales and Private Collections department, working on auctions such as Kingston Lisle Park, the Collection of the 3rd Baron Wraxall, the Collection of Sir William Whitfield CBE, and Aynhoe Park. As well as building brand awareness of Dreweatts, my job is to create a sense of anticipation and excitement around a house sale, and to unravel and promote the key provenances and stories of these collections, which can stretch across generations. We always do a printed catalogue to create a lasting legacy for our clients – parting with family history can be an emotional experience.

This 200-year-old-plus portrait of the Princess of Wales and her daughter by Maria Cosway made £62,400.

The sale ‘Weston Hall and the Sitwells: A Family Legacy’, held last November, was a real highlight. The collection had been amassed since the early 18th century. One of my favourite lots was the c1800 oil painting, Portrait of Caroline, Princess of Wales and her daughter Princess Charlotte by Maria Cosway. Another was the address book of early 20th-century poet and critic, Edith Sitwell, which contained waspish notes about figures such as Noel Coward and The Queen Mother. It was a fascinating insight into her sharp character.
