This autumn, a flavour of ‘Le Goût Rothschild’ will be served up at Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury when a collection of furnishings from the Rothschild seat, Exbury House in Hampshire, comes up for sale. The Rothschilds – a fabulously wealthy European banking family – had homes across France and Britain, and in 1919 Lionel Nathan de Rothschild bought 18th-century Exbury House, which is now better known for its world-class collection of rhododendrons and azaleas.

The 220 lots being auctioned off, with estimates from £100–£60,000, include fine furniture, works of art, lighting, carpets and silver, many of them family heirlooms once belonging to the great art collector Alfred de Rothschild. Specialist Mark Yuan-Richards says, ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire historic pieces with impeccable provenance.

Highlights include a micro-mosaic centre table attributed to the Roman mosaicist, Francesco Belloni, who went on to work for Napoleon; the top is finely inlaid with a laurel wreath and bands of scrolling leaves and flowers and sits on a base carved from giallo antico marble.’ woolleyandwallis.co.uk
