Blenheim palace has been the home of the Dukes of Marlborough since 1705, when it was built for the 1st Duke John Churchill as a reward from Queen Anne following his war efforts and success during the Spanish Succession.

And as his wife Sarah, the 1st Duchess of Marlborough, is a character in the award-winning film The Favourite, it’s only fitting that the costumes from the movie should be exhibited at the historic site.

If you’ve watched the 2018 film, you’ll be familiar with the striking, mainly monochrome, slightly edgy outfits worn by the characters. Historical accuracy was eschewed in favour of idiosyncrasy, which perfectly suits the un-conventional dramatization of the life of Queen Anne.

Created by Sandy Powell, a renowned British designer who has won 15 BAFTAS for her designs (including for her pieces for The Favourite), the costumes will be on display at Blenheim Palace until the 19th June as part of the Battlefield & Baroque exhibition.

The exhibition will take visitors back in time to Blenheim in the 1700s, with displays of clothing, food, games and music that would have been commonplace of the time.
Also featured in the exhibition are displays of 18th-century armour, music and instruments, the recreation of a court feast of the time and a collection of important papers including maps, documents and artefacts from Blenheim’s archive that have never been displayed to the public before.
