The dining chairs are a mix of local finds and family heirlooms from Tamsin\u2019s mother and grandmother. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap article-full-body sans-serif\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-color\">P<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(18, 18, 18)\">eering through the gate that opens onto Tamsin Scott\u2019s cottage in the seaside town of <\/span>Rye in Sussex, I imagine the star of a period drama, trailing skirts swishing as she makes her way up the garden path. Barely contained planting cascades across flagstones: a froth of snapdragons, lupins and lavender. The effect, says Tamsin, is the quintessence of English gardening; \u2018rambling, luxuriant, a little eccentric\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Tamsin knows about these things. As the floral designer behind Amazon\u2019s genre-fluid <em>The <\/em><em>Great, <\/em>and director Autumn de Wilde\u2019s macaroon-hued film version of <em>Emma, <\/em>her job is to ensure that the flora is narrative appropriate. A hothouse lily for Jane Austen\u2019s \u2018aspirational\u2019 Emma, and \u2018over-the-top cascades of wild roses\u2019 for Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great. \u2018Flowers,\u2019 she says, \u2018can tell their own quiet story.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Flowers also bring a sense of poetry to the home she shares with her husband, Oliver, and their two children. The 1820s listed property \u2013 one of the earliest bungalows in Britain \u2013 was built for the gardener who tended the nearby estate. In summer, the garden is perfumed with honeysuckle and roses; the venerable fig tree throws a green shade. From the treehouse, made from salvaged wooden panelling, you can glimpse the sea through the porthole window.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u2018We used to live in the house with two front doors in the middle of Rye, but I\u2019d been eyeing up this place for a while,\u2019 she says. Visiting for the first time, she clutched the estate agent\u2019s hand. It was a thesp-ish moment for drama school graduate Tamsin. \u2018I wept\u2026 because I knew that I didn\u2019t need to go inside.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"no-tts wp-block-purple-slider\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-speed=\"300\" data-effect=\"fade\"><li class=\"no-tts blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2022\/03\/4e2d3ec1-b4b0-4ef8-90d4-5c59c1ff5d1c.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"5678\" data-link=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/homesantiques\/4e2d3ec1-b4b0-4ef8-90d4-5c59c1ff5d1c\/\"\/><figcaption>Loose covers in ticking hide black velvet sofas, while lace cloths disguise stereo loudspeakers. The reclaimed glass lamp bases were brought back to life with a mix of Pooky, Oka and homemade shades. Meanwhile, she widened the hallway, adding a \u2018mishmash\u2019 of art and antiques \u2018to glue it all together\u2019. Her great-grandmother\u2019s cruiseholiday trunk hides the record player in the sitting room. There are props, too \u2013 an overscaled cotton reel turned into a table, and a chickenwire swan, salvaged from past productions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Like the influential mid-century florist Constance Spry, who also worked in film, Tamsin is a fan of the swan-shaped vases that glide serenely across table tops and shelves. \u2018The earliest ones date from 1900 and were made by potteries like Goebel or Hornsea. My grandmother collected them and used to name each one. Her granny\u2019s collection of swans sits on the very top \u2013a mix of Goebel, Hornsea, Dartmouth and Donegal Parian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\"><p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-color\"><strong>\u2018Much of the hand-me-down Spode was only ever for display, so I love using them now. I can remember special meals eaten off each plate\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">A swan-like pedalo drifts across a lake in the photo by Tim Walker, which hangs above the fireplace. Tamsin has known the fashion photographer, renowned for his ethereal, bloom-strewn imagery, since childhood and occasionally works on shoots with him. In their early twenties, the friends would forage for flowers for his early assignments. She recalls moonlit nights, shaking trees to release blossoms, like fragrant confetti. Walker once called her \u2018the Constance Spry to my Cecil Beaton\u2019. His style \u2013a mix of romance and surrealism \u2013 has been a huge influence. \u2018We have similar taste and like to see flowers as art. Sometimes, when I am working, I feel that I\u2019m painting a picture; when I start I\u2019ll have no idea of how the flowers will look in the end. I love that freedom.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">The former BBC journalist learnt about flowers when she decided to \u2018chuck in\u2019 her media job and take a job at influential florist Nikki Tibbles\u2019 Wild at Heart shop in west London. Her friend made the cushions out of old Sanderson curtains. The tutu is a legacy of her high school days in LA, when she teamed it with Converse All Stars.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Nowadays her studio is an old apple store nearby, where the green door \u2018with its soft patina of time\u2019 opens on to views of the valley. Silk flowers wrap around beams; vintage cabinets are filled with reference books. \u2018I use everything from vintage seed catalogues to paintings to get the details right. Wallpaper\u2019s a good starting point. The Victorians, for instance, used rich Gothic styles; after the 1840s, they shifted to macaroon colours with silvery golds. By the 1940s flowers had become more fun: a spray of Love lies Bleeding, or a curled rhubarb leaf.\u2019 For <em>Trust, <\/em>the John Paul Getty biopic, Tamsin chose brash, 1980s blooms: \u2018I\u2019m actually rather fond of how bad flowers were then.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">In medieval times, it was traditional to give friends a posy or \u2018tussie-mussie\u2019 of flowers to ward off spirits \u2013 and smells. Tamsin likes to make her own version. On country walks, she gathers up feathers and wildflowers. Secured with a ribbon and dangling from her front door, her modern posy has a double meaning. You might choose to see it as a talisman or, as she puts it: \u2018just a pretty thing to adorn your home\u2019. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gypsyroseflowers.co.uk\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gypsyroseflowers.co.uk\/\">gypsyroseflowers<\/a>;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gypsyrosesets\/?hl=en\"> @gypsyrosesets <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\"><p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-color\"><strong>\u2018Some of the best inspiration can be found by just gallivanting around the gardens of times gone by. The National Trust and English Heritage are fantastic resources\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<ul class=\"no-tts wp-block-purple-slider\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-speed=\"300\" data-effect=\"fade\"><li class=\"no-tts blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2022\/03\/b8c9ccd5-8e7d-4d6c-b395-8e0d13d9d567.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"5683\" data-link=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/homesantiques\/b8c9ccd5-8e7d-4d6c-b395-8e0d13d9d567\/\"\/><figcaption> Inspired by legendary design editor Min Hogg, Tamsin painted the big-top stripes in the children\u2019s bedroom: \u2018Stripes are so much fun, aren\u2019t they?
