The rich colours and patterns of handmade rugs add warmth and opulence to interiors and have been treasured by collectors for centuries. Keeping rugs clean isn\u2019t just a question of making them look good \u2013 if you don\u2019t remove grit and dust it may become embedded in the structure of the rug\u00a0and cause damage that will\u00a0shorten its life.<\/p>\n

Not cleaning a rug may also encourage moths. Handmade rugs\u00a0should be vacuumed with extreme caution: never\u00a0vacuum fringes and bear in mind overzealous use of powerful vacuum cleaners can damage knots. If your rug is made from silk or is a delicate and valuable\u00a0antique, it\u2019s best to give it\u00a0to a professional to clean. Other rugs can be cleaned\u00a0by hand at home. How often you do so depends\u00a0on how much wear a rug\u00a0gets, but once every two years would be an average\u00a0recommended guide.<\/p>\n

Cane beater or vacuum<\/li>\n
White cloth<\/li>\n
Rug shampoo \u2013 use a variety without bleach<\/li>\n
Warm water<\/li>\n
White vinegar<\/li>\n

How to clean an antique rug<\/h2>\n
Remove loose dirt by gentle beating with a cane beater or vacuum on a gentle setting.<\/li>\n
Test for colour fastness by running a damp white cloth over the surface of the rug \u2013 if colour bleeds seek professional advice.<\/li>\n
Mix half a cup of rug shampoo with five cups of warm (not hot) water and one tablespoon of white vinegar.<\/li>\n
Lay rug on a hard, fat surface with pile uppermost. Dip\u00a0brush in cleaning\u00a0solution and begin at one corner, brushing the pile up and down gently. Work carefully across the surface of the rug without soaking. It isn\u2019t usually\u00a0necessary to clean\u00a0the reverse.<\/li>\n
Place the rug on a dry, hard, fat surface to dry thoroughly \u2013 a patio is ideal, weather permitting. Don\u2019t put it on the lawn \u2013 it will absorb moisture.<\/li>\n
Brush gently again in the direction of the pile before replacing it on the floor.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/body><\/html>\n
