This 1740 pine side table with br\u00eache violette marble top certainly caused a stir, with its lion mask, cabriole legs and \u2018hairy paw feet\u2019, a style beloved of the Georgians. The table is designed in the \u2018Roman\u2019 fashion, promoted by the 3rd Earl of Burlington and his prot\u00e9g\u00e9, the artist-architect William Kent, who also designed furniture.<\/span><\/p>\n ![\""Christies\"]( "\\"\"Christies\\"\/")
<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\nDescribed as made \u2018in the manner of William Kent\u2019 it closely resembles other recorded \u2018Kentian\u2019 furniture such as a painted and parcel-gilt table at the National Trust\u2019s Seaton Delaval in Northumberland. \u2018This beautiful table, with exquisite carving, is a known model which has always performed well at auction,\u2019 says Benedict Winter, Christie\u2019s head of sale. <\/span><\/p>\n\u2018Christie\u2019s had previously sold a similar table in walnut for \u00a3157,250 in 2008 that was formerly part of the great English furniture collection of Percival D Griffiths. <\/span>This time around, Jasper Conran\u2019s name, together with the exceptional craftsmanship of the table, combined to realise a fantastic result.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\nThe Georgian side table carried a sale estimate of \u00a330,000 to \u00a350,000, however the winning bid was \u00a3200,000, a great result for Christie\u2019s.<\/p><\/body><\/html>\n
