Pictures are the backdrop to family life, with meaning and interest gathering as your taste evolves.\u2019<\/p><p>So, an art collection tells a personal story, but how to begin that narrative? <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-your-research\">Do your research<\/h2><p>\u2018A wonderful thing for budding collectors to do is to go to as many exhibitions as possible to be amongst paintings, prints and drawings; to become engrossed in it and refine your taste,\u2019 says Caroline Lay of Lay\u2019s Auctioneers in Penzance. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidlay.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">davidlay.co.uk<\/a><\/em><\/p><p>\u2018View auctions, too, even if they are completely out of your budget, to familiarise yourself with what\u2019s selling for what price,\u2019 she adds. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/AAF-Artist-Matt-Dosa-painting-his-installation-Assemble-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Affordable Art Fair\" class=\"wp-image-55406\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Matt Dosa paints his installation, Assemble, at the Affordable Art Fair &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Hugo Barclay, director of the twice-yearly Affordable Art Fair in London, agrees. \u2018Developing your taste and understanding what art resonates with you requires seeing a variety of artworks, making art fairs the perfect starting point for this journey.\u2019 <\/p><p>He also recommends adopting a spirit of openness and curiosity, adding: \u2018Inevitably, there will be artistic subject matters that take more than simply looking at the work to unpack the stories. Collecting is fun when you embark with the right mindset!\u2019<\/p><p>It might be landscapes or beach scenes that float your boat, or portraits of people and animals, or cameos of domestic scenes. Simply put, the more art you see and appreciate, the more your own taste will start to emerge \u2013 mediums you\u2019re drawn to, colours you like, compositions that chime. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/AAF-Artworks-from-RHG-Gallery-at-AAF-Battersea-Autumn-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Affordable Art Fair\" class=\"wp-image-55407\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Works by Carla Kranendonk at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery, Affordable Art Fair &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-go-to-fairs\">Go to fairs<\/h2><p>\u2018Fairs are a great way to get your eye in, tuning you in to what speaks to you and makes your heart sing,\u2019 says Katherine Kittoe, who sells a range of contemporary art via pop-up shows and art fairs including the annual London Art Fair in Islington. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonartfair.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">londonartfair.co.uk<\/a><\/em><\/p><p>Led by her own taste, she presents potential buyers with a selection of artworks, from serene still lifes to vivid abstract paintings to nostalgic prints, with prices from \u00a3150. <\/p><p>\u2018It\u2019s important to have things that are affordable for sale, as accessible price points can be the start of an art collector\u2019s journey.\u2019<\/p><p>For 25 years, the Affordable Art Fair has been a hub for art enthusiasts at every level. Over 100 galleries participate, bringing thousands of artworks with them, all clearly priced, with a cap of \u00a37,500. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/London-Art-Fair.jpg\" alt=\"London Art Fair\" class=\"wp-image-55408\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">London Art Fair was founded in 1989 with the aim of providing a space to showcase exceptional Modern and Contemporary Art &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Says director Hugo Barclay: \u2018With approximately 40 per cent of the fair\u2019s visitors being first-time art buyers, we place great importance on supporting newcomers.\u2019 <\/p><p>Initiatives include route guides designed to help visitors navigate the artworks on offer, such as \u2018Natural World\u2019 and \u2018The Director\u2019s Cut\u2019, and special displays highlighting artworks at certain price points, such as the \u2018Finds Under \u00a3500\u2019 display. <\/p><p>Many of the galleries also accept payment by instalment, through loan schemes such as Own Art and Art Money. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/affordableartfair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affordableartfair.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/London-Original-Pint-Fair-Jake-Garfield-Man-Wrestling-an-Angel-2022-1024x683.jpeg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"London Original Pint Fair\" class=\"wp-image-55412\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">London Original Print Fair returns in 2025 for its 40th anniversary &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-concentrate-on-prints\">Concentrate on prints<\/h2><p>Focusing on prints, rather than one-off artworks, is another affordable way into the market and also puts more established artists within reach. <\/p><p>The London Original Print Fair, held at Somerset House in March, is a honeypot for print lovers and describes itself as the place to \u2018learn about and collect works by the world\u2019s greatest masters, as well as new pieces by rising talents hot off the press.\u2019 <\/p><p>This year\u2019s show offered works by David Hockney, Paula Rego, Bridget Riley, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse alongside Grayson Perry, Marc Quinn and Joe Tilson. <\/p><p>And the gathering of over 40 galleries included Hauser &amp; Wirth for cutting-edge international artists; Glasgow Print Studio for Royal Academicians such as Elizabeth Blackadder and Eileen Cooper; The Redfern Gallery for Modern British artists such as John Piper and Victor Pasmore; and the Peter Harrington Gallery for tasteful antiquarian prints. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/londonoriginalprintfair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">londonoriginalprintfair.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Hokusai-1830-1831-TTago-Bay-Near-Ejiri-on-the-Tokaido-from-the-series-Thirty-Six-Views-of-Mt.-Fuji-Courtesy-Japan-Print-Gallery-1024x700.jpg?fit=800%2C547\" alt=\"London Original Print Fair\" class=\"wp-image-55447\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tago Bay near Ejiri on the T\u014dkaid\u014d from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, Katsushika Hokusai, POA, Japan Print Gallery at London Original Print Fair &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>For Modern British Art dealer, Freya Mitton, fairs are a vital way of reaching clients, and she attends the renowned British Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery each autumn, as well as a number of art and antiques fairs such as this month\u2019s Petworth Park Fair in West Sussex. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatchigallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>saatchigallery.com<\/em><\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/petworthparkfair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petworthparkfair.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><p>She has also taken up a permanent gallery space alongside art dealers Harry Moore-Gwynn and Guy Peppiatt at 6 Mason\u2019s Yard in St James\u2019s. At any one time, she stocks 200\u2013250 works, dating from the 1930s to the present day; everything from Julian Trevelyan to Mary Fedden and Ken Howard. <\/p><p>\u2018I buy what I really love myself \u2013 what I would be happy to live with in my own home \u2013 so whatever clients purchase from me is likely to go with other things they\u2019ve bought from me in the past.\u2019<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"848\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Saatchi-Gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Saatchi Gallery\" class=\"wp-image-55414\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shirley Baker exhibiting at British Art Fair, Saatchi Gallery London &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-buy-through-a-reputable-gallery\">Buy through a reputable gallery <\/h2><p>The authenticity of artworks is guaranteed and gallerists will sell only good examples of an artist\u2019s work, often acquired through private collectors rather than auction. <\/p><p>\u2018As a dealer your reputation is everything, so you don\u2019t want to damage that by selling things that aren\u2019t up to scratch. If I don\u2019t like the subject matter or the composition of a painting, for example, I won\u2019t buy<br\/>it for my gallery,\u2019 adds Freya. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Mary-Fedden-Pears-and-Blackberries-5500-856x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C957\" alt=\"Mary Fedden\" class=\"wp-image-55417\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pears and Blackberries, \u00a35,500, Mary Fedden, at Freya Mitton &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>She advises new collectors to work out what they enjoy and feel drawn to, and to trust their instincts. \u2018Then be patient; start gently. It\u2019s worth spending some time considering what you want and doing some research on the artists you\u2019d like to collect before you buy \u2013 Google images of their work, for example \u2013 and you must see works in the flesh.\u2019 <\/p><p>Pricewise, Freya stocks slight works by established artists or Royal Academicians from \u00a3500\u2013\u00a3800, with significant pictures by well-known artists beginning around \u00a32,000. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freyamitton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freyamitton.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><p>Of course, you can buy for investment as well as for love if you have the funds. David Messum has been running Messum\u2019s in the heart of St James\u2019s for 60 years, and has built up an unrivalled knowledge of \u2013 and access to \u2013 the works of British Impressionists and the Newlyn School of artists, as well as leading contemporary lights. <\/p><p>\u2018For a lot of the artists we\u2019ve looked after, we now have their estates, so we get the cream of their work, with the majority of what we sell ranging from \u00a32,000 up to \u00a315,000,\u2019 says David. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Messums-Dieppe-Harbour-by-Arthur-Henry-Knighton-Hammond-3850-1024x706.jpg?fit=800%2C552\" alt=\"Messums Dieppe Harbour \" class=\"wp-image-55418\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dieppe Harbour, Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond, \u00a33,850, Messum\u2019s &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Such estates include those of the equine painter Lucy Elizabeth Kemp-Welch, and the sought-after Newlyn School artists John Miller and Rose Hilton. All three are already bankers. <\/p><p>David enjoys the nurturing nature of his business as clients buy one, then another painting from him. \u2018So many customers have become close acquaintances and, if they want to change a painting or buy something more expensive \u2013 trade in or trade up \u2013 we\u2019ve got that relationship. <\/p><p>&#8216;We\u2019re a dealing business and we own our stock, so we have a long-term vested interest in whatever we have to sell.\u2019 David\u2019s paintings are beautifully framed by specialists, gleaming with gold leaf and wall-ready. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.messums.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">messums.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-buy-at-auction\">Buy at auction <\/h2><p>Auctions are another great source of art for novice collectors, with timed online auctions (similar to the way eBay works) the least intimidating type of sale to dip into. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Mallams-Sonia-Delaunay-Untitled-sold-2200BP-1024x794.jpg?fit=800%2C620\" alt=\"Sonia Delaunay\" class=\"wp-image-55420\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Untitled, Sonia Delaunay, sold for \u00a32,200 (plus buyer\u2019s premium), Mallams &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Mallams\u2019 Affordable Modern Art timed sale is held in August and February, offering around 150 lots that date from 1900 to the present day, with prices ranging from around \u00a340 to \u00a3200. <\/p><p>Max Fisher, 20th-century art specialist at Mallams, says: \u2018It\u2019s all done with the click of a button, so there\u2019s no mystique of the auction process to deal with. People do buy for investment at our sales, but mostly they want to spend money on something they like.\u2019 <\/p><p>As you become more familiar with auctions, you can gravitate to bidding live at Mallams\u2019 Modern Art &amp; Design sales, where average artworks go for around \u00a3600\u2013\u00a3700, so more of an outlay.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mallams.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em> mallams.co.uk<\/em><\/a><\/p><p>If there\u2019s a particular artist you\u2019re interested in, Max advises setting an alert on the-saleroom.com; if something by that artist comes up for sale at an auction house around the country, you\u2019ll be sent an email. <\/p><p>You could also focus on developing a good relationship with an auction house that specialises in a favoured category, for instance Cornish, Scottish or East Anglian art. Lay\u2019s Auctioneers in Penzance holds five Cornish Art sales a year, and Caroline Lay is in charge of them. <\/p><p>\u2018A great thing for budding collectors to do is to make friends with the auctioneers and cataloguers. Go to the pre-sale viewings, introduce yourself, say that you\u2019re looking to start a collection or ask questions about particular artists. <\/p><p>These are incredible events, with pictures hung from floor to ceiling. It\u2019s like being in a gallery but even more intense, as you browse 450 lots.\u2019 <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-look-for-bargains-or-entry-point-works\">Look for bargains or entry-point works<\/h2><p>Caroline advises looking at artists who are peripheral to the main schools of art in the area, which in Cornwall\u2019s case are the Newlyn, St Ives and Lamorna colonies. <\/p><p>\u2018Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson are out of most people\u2019s reach, but look instead for pieces by Denis Mitchell who worked for Hepworth for years and was a sculptor in his own right,\u2019 she suggests. <\/p><p>In the field of pictures and prints, artists such as Tony Giles and Rose Hilton would have known these earlier St Ives figures as young adults, but their paintings and prints are much more affordable; a small gouache painting by Giles might make \u00a3400 at auction, while Hilton\u2019s paintings go from \u00a32,000. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Lays-Rose-Hilton-The-Green-Sarong-sold-380BP-1024x883.jpg?fit=800%2C690\" alt=\"The Green Sarong, Rose Hilton\" class=\"wp-image-55448\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Green Sarong, Rose Hilton, sold for \u00a3380 (plus buyer\u2019s premium) at Lay\u2019s &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>The drawings and etchings of Karl Weschke, a former German POW in the Second World War, are also a good bet, costing \u00a3300\u2013\u00a3500. <\/p><p>Remember that Buyer\u2019s Premium will be applicable, and that royalties (known as Artist\u2019s Resale Right or ARR) are payable on artworks sold for the equivalent of \u20ac1,000 or above, if the artist has been dead for less than 70 years.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-buy-antique-art\">Buy \u2018antique art\u2019 <\/h2><p>Oil paintings, watercolours, Old Masters, drawings and prints spanning the 16th to the 19th centuries are auction house staples. <\/p><p>\u2018Old Masters are more accessible than you would think,\u2019 says Roseberys\u2019 specialist Charlotte Russell, who\u2019s in charge of three sales a year. \u2018While the museum names are very expensive, there are other artists from the same context who would have moved in the same milieu, but are far more affordable.\u2019 <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Roseberys-lot-318-Philip-Alexius-de-Laszlo-PRBA-Hungarian-British-1869-1937-Portrait-of-John-Adolphus-de-Laszlo-the-artists-son-in-Scouts-uniform-oil-on-panel-Estimate-6000-8000-sold-18368-629x1024.jpg?fit=629%2C1024\" alt=\"Adolphus de L\u00e1szl\u00f3\" class=\"wp-image-55450\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Portrait of John Adolphus de L\u00e1szl\u00f3, Phillip Adolphus de L\u00e1szl\u00f3, sold for \u00a318,368 at Roseberys &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>She adds that if you\u2019re interested in the really big names, such as Albrecht D\u00fcrer and Rembrandt, then start small, looking for works on paper \u2013 drawings and etchings \u2013 that cost in the low thousands of pounds. <\/p><p>\u2018At Roseberys we see a huge variety of things \u2013 Dutch and Italian works; lots from Britain, too. Among them you can find absolute bargains, and that\u2019s why auctions are exciting.\u2019<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-miniature-masterpieces\">Miniature masterpieces<\/h2><p>Start your art collection with small works by big names. This November will be the 10th anniversary of Art on a Postcard (AOAP), the timed online auction founded to raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust.<\/p><p>Initially, artists were asked to create an anonymous, postcard-sized work of art for auction, which made the bidding process particularly piquant. Nowadays, artworks are attributed to artists and the big names continue to donate \u2013 Grayson Perry, Julian Opie, Andrew Cranston, Vanessa Garwood, Antonia Showering and Shaq\u00faelle Whyte among them. <\/p><p>To date, AOAP has raised over \u00a32.5million for the Trust and has recently run similar auctions for other worthy causes, such as War Child and International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2024\/04\/Art-on-a-Postcard-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Art on a Postcard\" class=\"wp-image-55423\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Find out more about upcoming auctions and buy greetings cards at artonapostcard.com &#8211; &#8211;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>The barnstorming initiative is the brainchild of filmmaker Gemma Pepp\u00e9, who spends her year combing art schools and Instagram for new talent, as well as approaching established artists around the world for contributions. <\/p><p>The online auctions are open for two weeks and all bids start at \u00a350, sometimes going up to as high as \u00a311,000 for a very sought-after or fashionable artist\u2019s work. <\/p><p>Says Gemma: \u2018High-profile artists are happy to do it if it\u2019s a cause that they like, while for emerging talent \u2013 art graduates and outsider artists \u2013 it\u2019s a great platform for others to discover them and to own a bit of their work before they are priced out of the market. <\/p><p>These auctions allow you to be a prolific collector of contemporary art on a small scale.\u2019 If you\u2019re not lucky enough to win one of the 650 or so postcards up for grabs, box-sets of greetings cards featuring the best artworks are sold throughout the year. <a href=\"https:\/\/artonapostcard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>artonapostcard.com<\/em><\/a><\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visiting art galleries and their acclaimed masterpieces is one thing, but the real satisfaction of being an art lover lies in building a collection of your own.
