One day, a few years back, I had an email from The Guardian<\/i>. They wanted to make a film about my charity Out of the Dark. But, when their guy showed up, he didn\u2019t have a camera. \u2018OK,\u2019 I thought, \u2018this is interesting.\u2019<\/p>\n

When, by day three, there was still no camera, I asked him what the deal was. He said: \u2018Don\u2019t worry, I haven\u2019t missed what I know I\u2019m going to film.\u2019 \u2018Wow,\u2019 I thought to myself, \u2018this guy\u2019s even more confident than me!\u2019<\/p>\n

But the next day, he had his camera and he hit the nail on the head. That video went viral and TV companies started contacting me, including the Money For Nothing<\/i> people. They asked me to restore a piece for the pilot. In that episode, I mentioned that I taught young people how to make money from nothing \u2013 and that\u2019s how it all came about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s going to sound cocky, but that first time in front of the camera felt like a normal day. I had no nerves whatsoever. The camera geezer said I was a natural, and I think that\u2019s why, by series three, I was also a presenter for the show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Early on, I was asked to upcycle an Ercol chair, which was when my signature style of painting just one leg in a bold colour came into its own. People sometimes stop me in the street and ask: \u2018Why don\u2019t you finish the job and paint all the legs?\u2019 And I simply reply: \u2018Because it\u2019s cool.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Waiting at the recycling centres can be the hardest part of the show. You can wait two weeks \u2013 and the smell is awful in the summer \u2013 for something good to come along. And even then not everyone wants to be on camera. I once had to watch as an Egg chair was thrown onto the tip! But\u00a0you have to respect people\u2019s wishes \u2013 it\u2019s not just an object to them; that chair may have held memories that the owner didn\u2019t want to keep.<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0Before he was a TV presenter, Jay ran a charity called Out of the Dark. He helped young people get out of anti-social behaviour patterns through furniture craft \u2013 giving them the skills to make a living.<\/li>\n
  2. He loves music. \u2018Soul, jazz, reggae, classical\u2026 I love it all!\u2019<\/li>\n
  3. The most rewarding day of Jay\u2019s career (so far) was working with a girl who hadn\u2019t smiled for years. \u2018After showing her how to craft, she started smiling \u2013 her mum was over the moon.\u2019<\/li>\n
  4. He\u2019s extremely optimistic. \u2019You have got to look on the positive side. Always.\u2019<\/li>\n
  5. His home is a neutral zone<\/a>. \u2018It\u2019s 50 shades of beige! It allows me to really enjoy colour at work.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>
