It’s been a long wait since Amazon greenlit Jack Ryan season 3 back in 2019, with lots of news dropping in the meantime – including that the show is coming to an end.

However, fans don’t need to worry too much. Not only will the CIA action thriller, which is based on characters from the Tom Clancy books, receive a fourth season before it finishes, but according to Deadline, a spin-off series could be in the works.

While the current series stars John Krasinski (The Office US, A Quiet Place), the spin-off with reportedly see Michael Peña (Ant-Man and The Wasp) take the franchise’s reins.

The first two seasons of Jack Ryan were hugely popular with fans, but the COVID-19 pandemic threw a spanner in the works, with showrunner Carlton Cuse confirming the Amazon Prime Video show’s multiple filming locations made it difficult to film over the past few years.

“It was logistically challenging to work on all eight episodes that we’re shooting on three continents with four different directors and often two – and sometimes three – crews shooting at once,” showrunner Carlton Cuse told The Hollywood Reporter.

“We had to actually go to the places. We couldn’t cheat the audience,” executive producer Graham Roland told TV Insider.

Still, with the third season now in the can, and the fourth said to be filming currently, fans can expect news of a release date to be revealed sooner rather than later.

Read on for everything you need to know about Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3.

When will Jack Ryan season 3 be released on Amazon Prime Video?

Jack Ryan seasons 1 and 2 were released on Amazon Prime Video in consecutive years (2018 and 2019), but that hasn’t happened with season 3 due to COVID-19 and related lockdown and travel restrictions.

There’s still currently still no news on when we can expect Jack Ryan season three to drop, although with Deadline reporting that filming concluded last year, we expect news of a release date to drop in the coming months. Watch this space, as we will keep this page updated.

Jack Ryan season 3 plot

In season 3,  Jack is said to be on the run and in a race against time. He is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy and suddenly finds himself a fugitive out in the cold. Now, wanted by both the CIA and an international rogue faction that he has uncovered, Jack is forced underground, crisscrossing Europe, trying to stay alive and prevent a massive global conflict.

Season 2 saw Jack almost drowned in a bathtub, so we imagine season three will see the agent continuing to get himself into dangerous situations – followed, of course, by narrow escapes.

However, don’t expect Jack Ryan to become (major Tom Clancy books spoiler!) the US President anytime soon.

“In the Clancy books, he goes from being an analyst in ‘Hunt for Red October’ to becoming the president of the United States,” showrunner Carlton Cuse previously told IndieWire. “And it felt like the sweet spot was in that moment where he goes from being an analyst to being an operative in the field for the first time.

“That was the part that seemed the most traumatic and compelling. In our version, it’s kind of a prequel to everything that’s gone on. He’s only worked in the CIA for four years, which is less than in the books.”

John Krasinski (The Office, Some Good News, A Quiet Place Parts 1 and 2) is confirmed to return as the Jack, alongside The Wire’s Wendell Pierce as James Greer, Jack’s boss. Michael Kelly is also set to return as Mike November.

Meanwhile Deadline first reported that Abbie Cornish, who played Jack’s girlfriend Cathy Mueller in season one, but didn’t appear in season two, is back for the new episodes.

New additions to the cast include Betty Gabriel as Elizabeth Wright, the Chief of Station, as well as James Cosmo, Peter Guinness, Nina Hoss and Alexej Manvelov.

Michael Peña will also join the cast, reportedly arriving at the end of season 3 before taking on a lead role in season 4. His character is not yet confirmed, Deadline are reporting that he will play Domingo “Ding” Chavez, who could go on to lead his own spin-off.
