There will be plenty of attention on refereeing decisions on the pitch and off it after last weekend’s ‘significant human error’ by the VAR team to incorrectly disallow Luis Diaz’s goal that, ultimately, proved decisive as Liverpool lost to Tottenham.

The VAR and Assistant VAR for that match, Darren England and Dan Cook, will not be involved in officiating this weekend’s matches but the fourth official, Michael Oliver, will take charge of Sunday’s big match at the Emirates Stadium.

Despite the importance of the clash, Oliver is unlikely to be dipping into his pocket on too many occasions as Arsenal have earned the fewest yellow cards this season with 10, while Manchester City are not too far ahead on 12.

John Brooks has dished out a red card in two of his four appearances in 2023/24 as well as a couple of penalties so the first match of the weekend, Tottenham’s trip to Luton, could prove an exciting affair for neutrals.
