Mikel Arteta will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s corresponding fixture when Arsenal travel to Newcastle United this weekend.

Martin Ødegaard’s early effort and Fabian Schär’s own goal secured the Gunners all three points at St James’ Park six months ago, and this is the sort of crunch clash Arteta’s side need to be winning if they are to lift the title at the end of the campaign.

The Arsenal boss will first need to lift spirits in his camp after Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup, although the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba were named on the bench for that match.

Despite a host of injuries to key players including Sven Botman and Alexander Isak, as well as Sandro Tonali’s suspension, Eddie Howe still managed to shuffle his pack as Newcastle scored an impressive 3-0 victory at Manchester United in their midweek cup clash.

The Magpies are among the form teams in the division thanks to their six-game unbeaten run, although they are five points behind the top five – so a victory is just as important for their ambitions as it is for Arsenal’s.
