In the same same fictional universe as Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, Chicago Med focuses on the staff of Gaffney Chicago Medical Centre’s emergency department – and, in good news for fans, season 9 is nearly here.

The new season will consist of 13 episodes, and like the Chicago-set hospital dramas ER and Chicago Hope that came before it, Chicago Med mixes often nail-biting medical cases with the behind the scenes relationships between the doctors and nurses.

All of that takes place under the watchful eye of the hospital’s chief administrator, Sharon Goodwin (S Epatha Merkerson), but there have been some major cast changes since the series first launched in 2015, with Dr Will Halstead, Dr Natalie Manning, Dr Sarah Reese and Dr Connor Rhodes among the key characters who have hung up their scrubs and moved onto pastures new.

There have also been notable new arrivals to the team, with it being recently announced that Blindspot‘s Luke Mitchell will join the season 9 cast in a guest starring role as Dr Mitch Ripley.

Ripley has been described as “an emergency department doctor with a troubled past who shares a history with Dr Charles (Oliver Platt)”, and is set to make his debut in the show’s opening episode.

Read on for everything you need to know about Chicago Med season 9.

When will Chicago Med season 9 air?

Like the other One Chicago dramas from executive producer Dick Wolf – Chicago PD and Chicago Fire – production on the new season of Chicago Med was delayed by the actors’ and writers’ strikes in the US last year.

But it’s now been confirmed that Chicago Med season 9 premieres on Wednesday 17th January 2024 at 8pm ET and 7pm Central Time in the US on NBC. Episodes will then stream the next day on Peacock.

For UK viewers, there’s been no word yet on when we can expect episodes to land but, as with previous seasons, we can expect Chicago Med season 9 to be available to watch on Sky Witness and NOW. Watch this space!

It’s probably easiest to start with who isn’t returning, as a few fan favourites unfortunately won’t be back for the next season.

Dr Will Halstead’s story came to an end when he left for Seattle at the end of season 8, so actor Nick Gehlfuss, who played him, is not expected to return.

Three other cast members – Guy Lockard (who played Dr Dylan Scott), Brian Tee (who played Dr Ethan Choi) and Yaya DaCosta (who played April) are also not expected to be back for season 9.

As for who will be joining the cast, Luke Mitchell will be starring in a guest role, with sources saying he could be moved up to a regular addition. Mitchell is set to make his debut as Dr Ripley in the season premiere, titled Row Row Row Your Boat on a Rocky Sea.

The Chicago Med cast we’d expect set to star in season 9 are as follows:

  • S Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin
  • Oliver Platt as Dr Daniel Charles
  • Marlyne Barrett as Maggie Lockwood
  • Dominic Rains as Dr Crockett Marcel
  • Steven Weber as Dr Dean Archer
  • Jessy Schram as Dr Hannah Asher
  • Luke Mitchell as Dr Mitch Ripley

Chicago Med season 9 plot: What will happen?

At the moment, the plot of season 9 is under wraps, but it’s safe to assume that there will be more crossovers with Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, more patients to be saved and also some potential fallout following the shock departure of Dr Will Halstead at the end of the previous season.

Season 8 also tackled issues like supply shortages and an understaffed emergency room at Gaffney Chicago Medical Centre, and with new owner Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) in charge, it is likely that more cutbacks and changes are on the horizon for the staff and patients.

According to NBC: “Chicago Med season 9 will likely pick up where we leave the doctors in season 8, which has been a nail-biting ordeal.

“Chicago Med’s fearless boss Sharon Goodwin (S Epatha Merkerson) is fighting tooth and nail to prevent Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) from turning the hospital into a for-profit hospital. Will this carry into the next season? The answer is unclear, but Chi-Hards can’t wait to find out.”
