Eric Carmen, the singer-songwriter behind such hit songs as All by Myself and Hungry Eyes, has died at the age of 74, it has been confirmed.

The news was announced by Carmen’s wife Amy, who posted a statement on his official website reading: “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend.”

She continued: “It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy.”

She also asked fans to “respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our enormous loss”, and ended the statement with a line from the song Love Is All That Matters, which featured on Carmen’s 1977 solo album Boats Against the Current.
