Danish political drama Borgen is returning for a fourth season set to premiere in 2022, almost 10 years since the previous instalment aired.
In January 2021, it was announced that Sidse Babett Knudsen (Westworld) will reprise her iconic role as Birgitte Nyborg, who became the first female Prime Minister of Denmark in the fictionalised version of the country.
Netflix helped to revive the series and worked alongside DR, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.
The fourth season, titled Borgen: Power and Glory, will see Birgitte in her role as Minister of Foreign Affairs and facing an all-new crisis.

Borgen season 4 release date
Borgen: Power and Glory will be released on Netflix worldwide on Thursday 2nd June 2022 at 8am GMT.
The series premiered earlier this year in Denmark on DR.
Filming began on January 11th 2021 in Copenhagen – a fan account for Sidse Babett Knudsen announced the news on Twitter.

The logline for the series states: “Borgen – Power and Glory, deals with some of the biggest political issues of our time; the relevance of the Danish Realm in the modern world, the superpowers’ battle for control of the Arctic – and not least, the climate crisis. The main story focuses on the struggle for power and what power does to people – both professionally and on a personal level.”

Sidse Babett Knudsen (who plays bike-riding politician Birgitte Nyborg) and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (as journalist Katrine Fønsmark) are both returning to the show, alongside multiple original cast members.

These returning stars include: Søren Malling as journalist Torben Friis, Signe Egholm Olsen as politician Anne Sophie Lindenkrone, Mikael Birkkjær as Birgitte’s former husband Philip Christensen, Lisbeth Wulff as journalist Pia Munk, Lars Mikkelsen as economist Søren Ravn, Laura Allen Müller Smith as politician Nadia Barazani, Jens Albinus as politician Jon Berthelsen, Lars Knutzon as Birgitte’s old avisor Bent Sejrø, and Peter Mygind as Birgitte’s old political rival and media personality Michael Laugesen.
And following the news that Netflix snapped up the rights to the series, it’s been announced that Borgen will be adding various stars from Netflix’s Danish series The Rain; Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, along with Özlem Saglanmak, Simon Bennebjerg, Johanne Louise Schmidt and Magnus Millang.
Finally, one major cast member who will not be returning is Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbæk as spin doctor and broadcaster Kasper Juul who played a significant role in the first three seasons. The character shares a child with Katrine in the series.

Elsewhere, it seems Nyborg will face disagreements with her son, Mangus.

Borgen season 4 is titled Borgen: Power and Glory and will follow Birgitte Nyborg on a new political journey.
The official synopsis reads: “Birgitte Nyborg is the newly appointed minister for foreign affairs when a drilling company suddenly discovers oil in Greenland. An event that marks the beginning of an international struggle for power in the Arctic, and one in which the otherwise so experienced politician, Nyborg must repeatedly accept that despite Denmark’s ‘big brother’ relationship with Greenland, when it comes to the international superpowers, it is Denmark that is the minor player – and a somewhat unruly one at that…

Lead actress Sidse Babett Knudsen said that she has “sky-high expectations” for the show’s renewal.
“We’re finally getting started with Borgen again, and it’s definitely about time. I have been looking forward to this moment so much that I feel like I am about to explode. I look forward to meeting all the new characters, people on both sides of the camera (and the desks) and to revisiting the ‘old ones’ from the first seasons,” she said. “You should be careful with what you say, but I have sky-high expectations on this project. And most of all, I look forward to moving back into Birgitte Nyborg. What a privilege to be able to ride the carousel once again with this character that I love so much.”
