The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced the nominations for the Golden Globes 2022, which recognise top work from across film and television.
Of course, there is a shadow looming over this year’s ceremony after the awarding organisation was embroiled in scandal earlier this year, when it came to light that not a single one of its members is Black.
In addition to this stark lack of diversity, 100 PR firms based in Hollywood came together to accuse the HFPA of “discriminatory behaviour, unprofessionalism, ethical impropriety and alleged financial corruption”.
As a result of this, the Golden Globes’ broadcasting partner – US network NBC – pulled out of airing this year’s ceremony, meaning it will not be televised but will still go ahead for a select few attendees.
In response, the HFPA’s rules and membership have been overhauled to address the concerns.
It’s unclear which, if any, of the A-list nominees will be in attendance this year, with Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield and Brian Cox among the British talent recognised.
American actor Jessica Chastain secured an impressive double nomination, earning nods for her work in biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye and HBO miniseries Scenes From A Marriage.
Blockbuster cinema made fairly little impact as per usual, with prestige sci-fi flick Dune and Disney’s Cruella being the rare exceptions, while Marvel series WandaVision also secured nods for stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany.
Last but not least, Netflix’s global phenomenon Squid Game scored several nominations, which is a rare feat for a television series not in the English language at the Globes.
