There are few recent film franchises more divisive than the Transformers movies.

Headed up for the most part by director Michael Bay, the robots in disguise’s big screen outings are characterised by huge battle sequences, bigger explosions and time-leaping narratives that reference everything from the extinction of the dinosaurs and the space race in the ‘60s, to the knights of King Arthur – not to mention the sentient robots that keep cracking jokes.

Love them or hate them, there’s no denying that the series, which is based on the much-loved ’80s cartoons, has a seriously impressive box office track record: it has grossed a total of $4.8 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time.

It kicked off in 2007 with Transformers, which starred Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, and introduced a new generation of viewers to the likes of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. It would go on to launch four sequels with the final one, The Last Knight, arriving in cinemas in 2017. The following year, the franchise took a different tack with the premiere of spin-off movie Bumblebee, set 20 years before the original movie.

Since then, plans for more Transformers films have been unveiled. A new trilogy, which will take place after Bumblebee, is in the works, with the first part, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, slated for release next year. Hamilton star Anthony Ramos and Judas and the Black Messiah’s Dominique Fishback are set to star in the movie, which is reportedly set in Brooklyn in 1994 and focuses on a pair of archaeologists dragged into an ancient conflict.

Unlike the complex timelines of the Marvel franchise or the Star Wars universe, it’s pretty easy to make your way through the battles between Optimus Prime’s Autobots and Megatron’s Decipticons in chronological order. If you are planning a re-watch ahead of the new film, here’s how to navigate the series in both chronological and release order.
