The first season of Netflix’s Firefly Lane left fans clamouring for more back in February 2021 when it ended on a huge cliffhanger.
Fortunately, a second season of the friendship saga between Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) is almost upon us.
Based on Kristin Hannah’s book of the same name, the first season followed the longtime best friends through 30 years of love, laughter, heartbreak and divorce, with their strong friendship as the one constant – until the season 1 cliffhanger revealed a mysterious rift sometime during the early 2000s and left the pair at an emotional crossroads.
Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke are returning as the friendship duo, as well as Ali Skovbye as Teenage Tully and Roan Curtis as Teenage Kate.
They’re joined by a handful of new cast additions including India de Beaufort (Charlotte), Greg Germann (Benedict), Jolene Purdy (Justine), and Ignacio Serricchio (Danny).
Here’s everything we know so far about the second season of Firefly Lane.
Firefly Lane season 2 release date: When will it air?
Firefly Lane season 2 will premiere on Netflix on 2nd December 2022.
The first nine episodes will land on that date.
There will be seven more episodes, which Netflix has announced will launch at some point in 2023.
Firefly Lane was renewed for a second season in May 2021. The news was announced by stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke in a very 2021 fashion, with the two talking over a video call that was posted on their social media:

The cast were primed for a season 2 for some time with Sarah Chalke telling Variety in March that she was “so hopeful” that the show will be picked up.
Firefly Lane season 2 cast: Who stars in it?
The majority of the Firefly Lane cast are returning, with the two female leads confirmed to reprise their roles: Katherine Heigl as the glamorous Tully, who is a famous talk-show host as an adult, and Scrubs star Sarah Chalke as Kate, who gives up her career in journalism to raise a family.

Everyone else should be back in some capacity (though given the ending of season one, we might not see Johnny quite so much…) and it highly likely that some new faces will join the existing cast for a second run.

What will Firefly Lane season 2 be about?

A vague synopsis from Netflix states: “Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke will reprise their roles as lifelong best friends facing the ultimate test of their friendship and the path to sustain the other relationships in their lives.”
Firefly Lane ended with Kate’s father’s funeral, which Tully attempts to attend – before Kate tells her that “no one” wants to see her. Tully begs for forgiveness for the mysterious betrayal that she’s committed, but Kate swears she can never move past it, and that their friendship is over.
Season two would no doubt explain what happened to cause this rift between the two former friends, in addition to showing us more childhood flashbacks.
Firefly Lane creator Maggie Friedman revealed to Entertainment Tonight: “I knew that Tully and Kate were going to be estranged at the end of the season, but I didn’t know how I was going to dramatise that.
“I knew we were working towards that signpost because I felt like a good cliffhanger for season one is: ‘Oh my God, wait, these “Firefly Lane girls forever” are suddenly not? What happened?’ I wanted to leave the audience with some big questions.”
Meanwhile, series star Brandon Jay McLaren has said he hopes to find out what happens between his character Travis, a widower and father, and Kate, with whom he develops a romantic connection (despite her feelings for her ex-husband, Johnny Ryan).
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he said: “Travis is such an interesting guy, he’s the first character that I’ve played that’s just the most earnest and genuinely nice character. He has no nefarious, ulterior motives or anything. So I would love to learn a little bit more about him and be able to explore he and Kate’s relationship further because they’re a cool match.”

Series creator Maggie Friedman has also spoken to EW about the potential of season two, saying:”I think there are a lot more stories to tell, if we’re lucky enough to have a season two, of those girls going through high school and what that’s like. They’re only in eighth grade when we leave them. They’ll have a lot of good teen years and fun seventies, growing up times with the great music and the fashions and all of the cultural changes. I think it’s just really interesting.
Friedman also teased the potential return of Max Brody (Jon-Michael Ecker), saying: “I think the two actors have such great chemistry. I love that character and what he does for Tully is really unique and interesting but I don’t know…”
