Like Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty has become a staple of regular game releases. It’s become a reliable expectation, ever since Modern Warfare revolutionised the online shooter landscape back in 2007. The Modern Warfare 2 remake – which dropped last year – is the latest in the franchise, and it’s still proving as popular as ever with new maps still being released.

Now that we’re half way through 2023, however, isn’t it about time we got a whole new Call of Duty game? It’s unusual to go a whole year without a new one.

Luckily for fans of the series, it looks like one is on the way. Keep reading to find out all the rumours that have surfaced so far.

New CoD 23: Will there be a Call of Duty game this year?

At the Summer Games Fest last week, just before revealing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Warzone season 4, host Geoff Keighley revealed that there will be a new Call of Duty game in 2023! In his words: “there’s a new Call of Duty coming this Fall along with Warzone Mobile.”

Although he didn’t provide any more details, we think this is worth getting excited about.

Previously, Insider Gaming exclusively revealed that there will be a new CoD game in 2023 — which goes against what Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier detailed back in November 2022.

Developed primarily by Sledgehammer Games, the new Call of Duty title this year is set to be a sequel to 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. It’s now expected that the next CoD game is, in fact, Modern Warfare 3.

Originally, Jason Schreier reported that the next full CoD game will be “by Treyarch” and “coming out in 2024”. He added that the game this year would instead be “a Modern Warfare 2 ‘premium’ (paid) expansion by Sledgehammer.” You can check out the tweet below:

Let me make this super clear:
– The next game, by Treyarch, is coming out in 2024
– Next year there will be a Modern Warfare II “premium” (paid) expansion by Sledgehammer
– It’s supposed to have lots of content! Maybe that’s why they call it a “full” release. But it’s more MWII https://t.co/jXKAiMFcTf
