“The Bat and the Cat… it’s got a nice ring to it.”

The new film follows Robert Pattinson in the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne opposite Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, but the film from director Matt Reeves promises to be quite different.

Discussing his take on the role, Pattinson told GQ: “And the first shot is so jarring from any other Batman movie that it’s just kind of a totally different pace. It was what Matt was saying from the first meeting I had with him: ‘I want to do a ’70s noir detective story, like The Conversation.’ And I kind of assumed that meant the mood board or something, the look of it.

“But from the first shot, it’s, Oh, this actually is a detective story. And I feel like an idiot, because I didn’t even know that Batman was ‘the world’s greatest detective’; I hadn’t heard that in my life before—but it really plays. Just ’cause there’s a lot of stuff where he’s in amongst the cops.

“Normally, when you see Batman he arrives and beats people up. But he’s having conversations, and there are emotional scenes between them, which I don’t think have been in any of the other movies.”

Warner Bros has already released a trailer for the film which really shows off the Bruce/Selina relationship.

“We’ve seen a lot of great stories about Bruce Wayne witnessing his parents’ murder and then trying to find a way to cope with that by perfecting himself into Batman,” Reeves told Empire Magazine. “But I wanted to do a story where he’s already been through the origins and does not yet really know exactly how to be Batman. It is a Year Two story. And I wanted you to connect to him. Not only as Bruce but as Batman.”

If that wasn’t enough, we have a whole host of villains to face Batman in the new adventure in the form of The Riddler, The Penguin and more.

Warner Bros clearly has very high hopes for The Batman, which is expected to be one of the biggest films of 2022, as they have recently started work on their second HBO Max series set to spin out of the blockbuster.

Two spin-offs are on the way, one based on the Gotham City Police Department and one on Colin Farrell’s iteration of The Penguin.

As we wait for more details on the film, read on for everything we know about 2022’s The Batman so far.

The Batman release date

CONFIRMED: The Batman is released in UK cinemas on Friday 4th March 2022.

Previously, it had been pencilled in for a release in June 2021, before moving to a Halloween-themed October date, and then jumping another five months to its current spot in the calendar.

The project first got underway on 27th January 2020, but The Batman filming was halted as the pandemic spiralled into a global crisis that March, with three-quarters of the movie still left to film (via Deadline).

Fortunately, work was able to resume in September 2020, after then-Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP announced that major productions would be able to film in England as long as they operate in a tightly controlled “bubble”.

Just days later, the movie went on hiatus once again after star Robert Pattinson tested positive for COVID-19, but fortunately he recovered from the illness and returned to work after his isolation period.

In March 2021, more than a year after cameras started rolling, director Matt Reeves announced a wrap on The Batman’s principal photography, meaning there’s every hope it will be able to make its current release date next year.

Four months later, Pattinson, Farrell and Reeves reunited for reshoots that took place over multiple weeks in the cities of Glasgow and York, according to The Daily Record.

Reshoots are very common for major blockbuster movies and not necessarily a cause for concern, so fans have no reason to worry about the quality of the reboot at this stage.
