Middlesbrough will be hoping it is another fabulous Tees–Wear derby when they welcome rivals Sunderland to the Riverside this weekend.

Michael Carrick’s side earned a thumping 4-0 victory at the Stadium of Light in October’s reverse fixture, with Sam Greenwood, Matt Crooks, Isaiah Jones and Marcus Forss finding the back of the net after Dan Neil’s dismissal for the hosts on the brink of half-time.

As well as local bragging rights, it is a crunch clash in the race for the Championship play-offs, as Middlesbrough sit 11th in the table on 40 points, while Sunderland are three points ahead in seventh.

Boro, back in action for the first time since losing 6-1 to Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie, have been plagued by inconsistency, and Carrick will be eager to string a run of wins together in order to turbocharge their hopes of repeating last season’s top six finish.

Sunderland are also hoping to appear in the play-offs for the second season in a row, but new boss Michael Beale is struggling to win over fans, and he will hope to use last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat of Stoke City as a springboard.
