Sunderland will bid to bounce back to winning ways when they welcome Hull City to the Stadium of Light for a crunch clash in the Championship play-off race.

The Black Cats suffered an emphatic 3-0 defeat to bitter rivals Newcastle United in the FA Cup third round, before slipping out of the top six with a 2-1 loss at automatic promotion prospects Ipswich Town last weekend.

The poor results and performances have led to some Sunderland fans expressing concern about new head coach Michael Beale, who replaced Tony Mowbray last month, and the former Rangers boss will be looking for a positive 90 minutes to silence those critics.

Hull are one point and two places behind Sunderland in ninth, but they are also looking to arrest a poor run of form after successive league defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City.

Liam Rosenior’s Tigers have had limited time to prepare for the northerly trip to Wearside, after losing 2-1 to Birmingham City in an FA Cup third round replay on Tuesday night.
