<\/p>
Edgar Wright\u2019s trippy horror-fantasy movie Last Night in Soho<\/a> was full of unusual visuals and stand-out moments \u2013 but what might surprise you is how many of them were achieved \u201clive\u201d on set, rather than simply added in later.<\/p>\n For example, in the numerous mirror scenes in the film \u2013 where a character walks past a mirror with the reflection of a different character, rather than themselves \u2013 there were often actors \u201cin\u201d the mirrors on parallel sets, allowing their performances to play alongside each other\u2019s.<\/p>\n And in an exclusive new clip from behind-the-scenes of Last Night in Soho, RadioTimes.com<\/a> can reveal how one such scene was brought to life \u2013 or rather, director Wright can.<\/p> \u201cThere are a lot of mirror sequences in the movie \u2013 a lot of them are done \u2018for real\u2019 in the sense that it\u2019s happening in-camera, and there isn\u2019t a reliance on green screen and motion control,\u201d Wright explains in the clip, which appears as part of a longer feature on the film\u2019s DVD release.<\/p>\n \u201cWe use some of those effects in places, but I think people would be shocked to discover how much of it is actually happening.\u201d<\/p>\n For example, the first scene when Thomasin McKenzie\u2019s Ellie steps into the 1960s-era Caf\u00e9 de Paris, looking into a mirror to discover another woman \u2013 Anya Taylor-Joy\u2019s Sandie \u2013 looking back at her. This was achieved with a double set, a moving mirror \u2013 and a familiar set of twins best known for the Harry Potter movies.<\/p>\n \u201cThomasin McKenzie descends the staircase into the Caf\u00e9 de Paris, and meets a maitre d\u2019 played by James Phelps,\u201d Wright says. \u201cYou can see James Phelps\u2019 reflection in a mirror.<\/p>\n \u201cThen, the maitre d\u2019 walks in front of Thomasin McKenzie. At that point the mirror in the background is sliding away, to reveal a double set.\u201d<\/p>\n On that identical set? Taylor-Joy as Sandie, accompanied by an identical maitre d\u2019 of her own \u2013 played by James Phelps\u2019 identical twin brother Oliver. Previously, the pair played Fred and George Weasley over years of Potter films, and in Last Night in Soho they helped create a very different kind of movie magic.<\/p>\n \u201cNow you have four performers who are choreographed doing the same thing, at the same time,\u201d Wright concludes.<\/p>\n Altogether it\u2019s a fascinating glimpse into a scene that some viewers might not have looked at twice \u2013 even though in reality, it was happening twice right in front of them.<\/p>\n Last Night in Soho is available on digital now<\/a> and 4K UHD<\/a>, Blu-ray<\/a> and DVD<\/a> on 31st January.
