<\/p>
Director Craig Gillespie has defended Hulu\/Disney Plus miniseries Pam and Tommy<\/a> for going ahead without the approval of Pamela Anderson.<\/p>\n The factual drama tells the strange-but-true story about how a sex tape featuring Anderson and then-husband Tommy Lee became widely distributed across the United States.<\/p>\n Based on an exhaustive account published by Rolling Stone<\/a>, the series explores how disgruntled electrician Rand Gauthier acquired the explicit material and began selling it online during the early days of the world wide web.<\/p>\n Neither Anderson nor Lee were directly involved in the production, with Lily James revealing to press that her attempts to get in contact with the former Baywatch star were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n The show has also been subject to criticism from Anderson\u2019s longtime friend Courtney Love, who described it as \u201cf***ing outrageous\u201d in a since-deleted Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n Series director Gillespie, whose previous work include I, Tonya<\/a> and Cruella<\/a>, explained to\u00a0RadioTimes.com<\/a> why he decided to stay onboard despite Anderson\u2019s lack of approval to retell this traumatic story.<\/p>\n \u201cI absolutely respect any personal decision that she makes on that, and understand where she\u2019s coming from,\u201d he began. \u201c<\/span>The thing that gave me comfort was I felt like we really had an opportunity to change the narrative of this story, and to show it from a perspective that people can hopefully learn and grow from. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd I felt that we portrayed them in a very empathetic way. I thought the writers did a really nice job with that. So I felt that there was that opportunity, which was the hope.\u201d<\/span><\/p> Meanwhile, co-star Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black<\/a>), who plays Gauthier\u2019s ex-wife Erica Boyer, added that she hopes Anderson will come around to the series given the sympathetic lens through which it views her.<\/p>\n \u201cI really hope that she can feel the love that this show has for her because it\u2019s so deep, and I hope that there\u2019s a rethinking of the narrative that popular culture created around her and this tape,\u201d she told\u00a0RadioTimes.com<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd I mean, in an ideal world, it might even be sort of healing\u2026 I think it\u2019s really an ode to her bravery, her courage even, that this could happen and she kept going. I mean, I can\u2019t really imagine that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Schilling added: \u201cShe kept moving forward even as she had no real way to express herself. She was alone with what happened and everyone was making all these judgments, but she kept going. And I mean, it\u2019s heroic to see that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Pam and Tommy also stars Marvel\u2019s Sebastian Stan as M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce drummer Lee, while Seth Rogen (The Lion King<\/a>) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation<\/a>) portray Gauthier and his business associate Milton Ingley.<\/p>\n Pam and Tommy premieres on Disney Plus on Wednesday 2nd February.
