The Olympian, who took home a silver medal in the men\u2019s BMX Supercross at Tokyo 2020, has sprained his knee and is now taking some time out of training to recover.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an unfortunate accident,\u201d Whyte said in a statement. \u201cI\u2019ve trained and worked hard with [professional partner Tippy Packard] to perform this weekend.<\/p>
\u201cFor me, as an athlete, I\u2019m used to stuff like this happening where you get injured and can\u2019t compete. I\u2019m more sad for Tippy, she\u2019s worked hard so not being able to skate is obviously upsetting. We both really wanted to do this number, it\u2019s a cool performance and we put a lot of effort into it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was so happy and excited for everyone when they skated last weekend. I was watching and couldn\u2019t wait to skate this Sunday. I\u2019ll be there cheering everyone on!\u201d<\/p>\n
The unfortunate mishap comes after fellow contestant Rachel Stevens<\/a> had to postpone her debut performance after falling on the ice and fracturing her wrist<\/a>.<\/p>\n Whyte was one of six celebrities to dance in the opening episode of the series, finishing in a respectable fourth place with a grand total of 24 points from the judging panel.<\/p>\n The news broke via Dancing On Ice\u2019s official Instagram<\/a> page, which shared an image of Whyte paired with the following caption: \u201cDuring rehearsals for this Sunday\u2019s show, Kye fell on the ice and sustained an injury, a sprain to his knee.<\/p>\n \u201cHe will therefore not perform in this weekend\u2019s show.\u201d<\/p>\n Notably, the message only ruled out an appearance on tomorrow night\u2019s episode of Dancing On Ice, suggesting that Whyte could return further into the series, as echoed by Whyte\u2019s own comments.<\/p>\n Stevens took just one week off to recover from her wrist fracture so there is hope, although the exact severity of Whyte\u2019s sprain has not been made known.<\/p>\n The first contestant to be eliminated from this year\u2019s Dancing On Ice was rugby player Ben Foden<\/a>, who faced television presenter Ria Hebden<\/a> in the dreaded skate-off.<\/p>\n The Dancing On Ice line-up<\/a> also includes singer Kimberly Wyatt<\/a>, Corrie star Sally Dynevor<\/a>, Love Island\u2019s Liberty Poole<\/a>, and Happy Mondays band member Bez<\/a>.<\/p>\n Dancing On Ice continues Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
