It\u2019s been one of the most hotly-anticipated sequels of the last five years, but 2022 is the year that we can finally expect Top Gun: Maverick to land.<\/p>\n

Tom Cruise returns as Pete \u2018Maverick\u2019 Mitchell in the sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun, with\u00a0co-star Val Kilmer set to reprise his role as Maverick\u2019s pilot rival Iceman and Miles Teller joining the stellar cast as the son of Maverick\u2019s late partner Goose.<\/p>\n

And judging by the new footage from the movie that\u2019s been released, we\u2019re certainly in for a treat.<\/p>\n

Fans tuning into CBS for the AFC Championship game on Sunday (30th January) were surprised by a video from Tom Cruise.<\/p>\n

The actor discussed the two teams playing for the AFC Championship, while footage from the sequel played in the background.<\/p>\n

\u201cFootball. America\u2019s game. A sport that rewards hard work, sacrifice, dedication and skill. A sport that challenges you to always get better, to never settle for second place,\u201d Cruise said.<\/p>\n

The video then gave fans a glimpse of Cruise on a motorcycle in a scene mirroring an iconic shot from the original movie, as well as other exciting shots of the actor flying a jet.<\/p>\n\nThe long-awaited sequel was previously slated for a November 2021 release but it has now been put on hold until May this year by Paramount due to COVID-19 reasons.<\/p>\nThat means it will now be released a whopping 36 years after the original \u2013 and three years after initially intended.<\/p>\nBut it\u2019s looking like it might be worth the wait, with Cruise having promised the movie will be \u201ceverything you hope it\u2019s going to be\u201d.<\/p>\n\u201cThe movie has exactly the right mix of nostalgia for the first one, but then the continuation of the story and the characters,\u201d he told\u00a0<a style=\""font-weight:\" inherit=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.today.com\/video\/jon-hamm-talks-about-his-virtual-hangout-and-top-gun-maverick-91879493641"\">Today<\/a>.<\/p>\nSo, without with the latest date set for 27th May 2022<\/strong>, moving from the previously planned release on 19th November 2021.<\/p>\nThe sequel was originally scheduled to be released on 12th July 2019 but was then <a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/news\/film\/2018-08-30\/top-gun-sequel-delayed-new-release-date-2020\/"\">pushed back almost a year<\/a> to 26th June 2020 \u2013 and then again to 17th July 2020. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the entertainment industry, the film was then pushed back to 23rd December 2020 before it was moved again to 2021. Paramount set a July release date, but yes \u2013 it was delayed again<\/em> to November.<\/p>\nThis means that the sequel will come 36 years after its predecessor. The initial delay was due to Paramount Pictures wanting additional time to present flight sequences with new planes and technology, sccording to <a href=\"\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/tom-cruise-top-gun-sequel-maverick-delayed-1202920891\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\nTom Cruise shared the initial news on <a href=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-fYBm7DYyZ\/?utm_source=ig_embed"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> saying: \u201cI know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer.\u201d<\/p>\nIf you\u2019re wondering what took so long, Cruise said that he doesn\u2019t \u201cmake movies just to make movies\u201d.<\/p>\nFilming took place from May 2018 to June 2019.<\/p>\n<ul><li><a href=\"\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Top-Gun-Tom-Cruise\/dp\/B00FZT8FDK?tag=radtim0b-21&ascsubtag=radiotimes-0"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""sponsored" noopener noreferrer\">Watch Top Gun now on Amazon Prime Video<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><h2>Top Gun: Maverick trailer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/tom-cruise-comic-con-top-gun-maverick\/"\">The first trailer<\/a> was shown at Comic-Con International in 2019. The footage shows Cruise\u2019s Maverick once again ignoring his superior\u2019s (<a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/movies\/top-gun-maverick-sequel-cast-jon-hamm-ed-harris-join-tom-cruise\/"\">Ed Harris<\/a>) orders when he is told the Top Gun program is getting shut down, which leads to an almost fatal accident.<\/p>\nCruise appeared at 2019\u2019s San Diego Comic-Con to release the new footage, taking the stage in a packed Hall H too.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\""twitter-tweet"\" data-dnt=\""true"\">Thank you to all the fans who came out to Hall H today. We have to have him in the film\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\u201cHe was the driving force. We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he\u2019s going to make another Top Gun, Val had to be in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\nDirector Joseph Kosinski told <a href=\"\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2020\/01\/29\/top-gun-maverick-new-photos\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>: \u201cThe rivalry and relationship between Iceman and Maverick is one of those things that makes that first film so iconic.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s a relationship that is important to the Top Gun\u00a0franchise and as a fan I would want to see how it\u2019s evolved.\u201d<\/p>\nOne original star who definitely won\u2019t be back is Kelly McGillis who has confirmed she will not reprise her role as Maverick\u2019s love interest Charlie.<\/p>\nLargely, Top Gun: Maverick will have a cast of new faces including Miles Teller (Whiplash) as the son of Goose from the first film and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly as a new love interest (replacing Kelly McGillis). \u201cOh my God, no,\u201d she replied when <a href=\""https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/kelly-mcgillis-says-she-wasnt-asked-to-be-part-of-top-gun-sequel-exclusive-129341"\">Entertainment Tonight<\/a> put the question to her. \u201cI\u2019m old and I\u2019m fat and I look age appropriate for what my age is and that is not what that whole scene is about. The film is phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n<a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/news\/film\/2018-08-23\/top-gun-maverick-sequel-cast-jon-hamm-ed-harris-join-tom-cruise\/"\">Ed Harris<\/a> (playing a rear admiral), <a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/news\/film\/2018-08-23\/top-gun-maverick-sequel-cast-jon-hamm-ed-harris-join-tom-cruise\/"\">Jon Hamm<\/a> (as a vice admiral), <a href=\""https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/news\/film\/2018-08-23\/top-gun-maverick-sequel-cast-jon-hamm-ed-harris-join-tom-cruise\/"\">Lewis Pullman<\/a> (pilot trainee Bob), Jennifer Connelly<\/strong> and Glen Powell<\/strong> (pilot trainee \u2018Hangman\u2019) have also joined the cast. Connelly is the movie\u2019s lead playing a single mother who runs a local bar near the base. A new pilot with also be played by Manny Jacinto, from The Good Place.<\/p>\nAt one point it seems Kilmer had confirmed the retired Gene Hackman would appear, but this isn\u2019t the case.\u00a0 Michael Ironside also won\u2019t be back as Lt Commander Rick \u2018Jester\u2019 Heatherly \u2013 apparently his relationship with the director Jerry Bruckheimer isn\u2019t very good.<\/p>\nSpeaking about his character, Jon Hamm recently told <a href=\"\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/features\/jon-hamm-on-mad-men-mental-health-and-filming-top-gun-maverick\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Men\u2019s Journal<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s not so much of a father figure, the way Viper was to Tom. He\u2019s air boss of the fighter wing. He has a lot of authority and responsibility. When that rubs up against Maverick, there\u2019s friction, as you would guess. I provide the friction.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Top Gun: Maverick plot<\/strong><\/h2>\nExclusive footage of the film\u2019s first 13 minutes was shown during CinemaCon, giving viewers a tease of what to expect. Mild spoilers for Top Gun: Maverick\u2019s opening scene ahead<\/strong>.<\/p>\nTom Cruise\u2019s Maverick is told by Ed Harris\u2019 Admiral that the Top Gun programme is being shut down. Still not one to abide by the rules, Maverick ignores the Admiral\u2019s warnings and hops into his jet. It is being speculated that, just like in the original, our pilots will be facing off against the Russians.<\/p>\nTop Gun: Maverick also sees Tom Cruise truly in the pilot seat. Well, fans are speculating that it all comes down to China which has emerged as a huge movie market since Top Gun was released 34 years ago.<\/p>\nAdd to that the fact that Tencent Pictures \u2013 the film arm of Chinese company Tencent \u2013 has co-financed the sequel, and many have come to the conclusion that the switch was made so as not to alienate Chinese powers that be and cinema-goers.<\/p>\n<h2>What was the original Top Gun movie about?<\/strong><\/h2>\nThe \u201980s classic follows US Naval Aviator Pete \u2018Maverick\u2019 Mitchell, a talented pilot with little regard for the rules and a close friendship with co-pilot Goose (played by Anthony Edwards).<\/p>\nHe is recruited to an elite fighter school, where he clashes with fellow student Iceman (Val Kilmer) in the race to win the coveted Top Gun trophy. Oh, and he starts to fall for the beautiful instructor, Charlie (Kelly McGillis), as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Will Tom Cruise do his own stunts?<\/strong><\/h2>\nYes, in\u00a0an interview with <a href=\"\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/tom-cruise-top-gun-maverick-exclusive\/"\" target=\""_blank"\" rel=\""noopener" noopener noreferrer\">Empire<\/a>, Cruise said he told producer Jerry Bruckheimer\u00a0that he\u2019d agreed to return as Maverick on one condition: he could do his own stunts.<\/p>\n\u201cI said to Jerry [Bruckheimer], \u2018I\u2019ll do it if\u2026\u2019 meaning, I\u2019m not going to do the CGI stuff,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\nIn addition, Jennifer Connelly revealed that Cruise was up for the stunts calling them \u201cextraordinary\u201d.<\/p>\nJerry Bruckheimer, speaking to Yahoo, said: \u201c[Cruise] put the actors through this gruelling process over three months so they could take the G-forces when we put them in the F\/A-18s. It was really a tough slog for these young actors, because they also had to go through water survival training, where they are blindfolded and put in a water tank that\u2019s turned upside down and they have to figure out how to get out.<\/p>\n\u201cAnd Tom went through all the same stuff! They told me he went through that training just like a 22-year-old would \u2014 that\u2019s how good he is.\u201d<\/p>\nHe added that the main difference in the original Top Gun the team put the cast in the F-14s.<\/p>\n\u201cWe couldn\u2019t use one frame of it, except some stuff on Tom, because they all threw up,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s hysterical to see their eyes roll back in their heads. So everything was done on a gimbal. But in this movie, Tom wanted to make sure the actors could actually be in the F-18s.\u201d<\/p>\nWhile appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Cruise\u2019s co-stars spoke of their experiences doing their own stunts \u2013 including Jennifer Connelly, who said she was afraid to tell Cruise that she was scared of flying.<\/p>\n\u201cWhen I signed on for the movie there was no flying for my character.\u00a0 I then found myself taxiing on a runway in a tiny plane with Tom and he said, \u2018Have you been a plane like this before? Have you ever done any aerobatic flying before?\u2019<\/p>\nI started to get very nervous when he said, \u2018It will be very graceful and very elegant,\u2019 and that\u2019s how I found out I would be up in the P51 with Tom flying it!\u201d<\/p>\nMiles Teller added: \u201cI did know, but underestimated the training that was needed to withstand the g-force.
